Deal 1: Where are all the diamonds?

Scores:

5♣: 100
4NT: 70
Double: 50
Pass: 10

Paul Chemla

5♣. 4NT shows a diamond second suit and, with a void in diamonds, a take-out double could be disastrous.

Cédric Lorenzini

5♣. I only have two defensive tricks against 4 spades, whereas I could be making a 5-level contract with my partner having a normal hand: ♠3 ♥Q7532 ♦J8542 ♣83. The difference due to a doubled game making is of the order of 1300 points, whereas sacrificing for one off against one off only costs 200 points. The cost of the mistake should get us bidding. The choice of bid remains: a unilateral decision to bid 5♣ or suggesting an alternative trump suit (hearts) by way of a 4NT bid.
