The Educational World of Peter Hollands

Funbridge username: Sliynk
Nationality: Australian
Playing style: I like to think I am a creative player and I like to read where the cards are rather than just crunch the numbers and play the percentages. I am totally willing to look like an idiot to back my gut.
Hi, I’m Pete Hollands. I try to create bridge videos that allow people to get into the mind of an expert player while still being fun and light-hearted. The aim of my videos is that whatever your level, you will get something out of them and enjoy them.
Interview with Peter Hollands
What inspired you to become a bridge influencer?
I was doing a PhD in materials engineering when the project ran out of money, so I dropped out of that and needed a break. I figured I would try professional bridge, but didn’t want to do the normal path. I played other games and learnt from people online, so I wanted to recreate that.
If you had to encourage someone to play bridge, what would you say?
The game isn’t solved yet, you can test boundaries and see what works and what doesn’t. Don’t let all the “rules” get you down. They are actually just guidelines, feel free to break them.

Do you also do bridge coaching online?
My website, Bridgevid, offers plenty of lesson videos around 40 minutes long, as well as short 5-minute videos with quick tips you can easily add to your daily routine.
What are your dreams and goals as a bridge player?
I managed to exceed my goals as a bridge player. I never thought I would make it to a world open bridge championship. I’d like to do that again some day, but for now I’ve stepped back from the serious competitive stage and just love enjoying the game and having fun.
What is your best bridge memory?
Winning two silver medals in a world junior championship with some of my best mates (I started playing bridge when I was 14). I also have represented Australia at an Open level in a Bermuda Bowl.
What do you like most about Funbridge?
I love the statistics page, where you can delve in and see which areas you do well in and where you need to improve. Is it slams? Is it defending NT? What about when you’re redoubled?

For new players, the bidding may seem daunting and you want to learn new conventions to get better, but actually I find working on your card play a better way to improve quickly. Learning a new convention might not improve your scores.
How did you fare in the declarer play challenge?

Hi Peter,
The 47th World Championships in Denmark.
I am interested in your take on the bidding of board 12 in the second round of the open teams, Aust Vs Canada.
How is it possible to finish in 1NT ?
I am not meaning to be critical but I am finding it hard to come up with an explanation to find at least 2NT apart from dropping an ace under the table or possibly intervention by a director.
Can you offer a reason??
Cheers…David Cohen.([email protected])
