4♠. It is clear that with three Aces missing, including a complete lack of diamond control, I am forced to settle for 4♠. By passing over East’s double, a chance arises to find a slam if my partner holds two Aces and the diamond control. Is this a poisoned gift? An optimistic player would not resist it.
Pass. I have never played this convention. My plan is to pass and hope my partner bids 4♥. That way, if I then bid 4♠, I hope it shows slam interest, the only explanation for why I did not bid 4♠ directly. I think redoubling and then bidding 4♠ means the same thing but with a diamond control in addition. If my partner is not on the same wavelength, it could be tragic, but “that’s life”.
