September Bidding Contest – The Results

Summary
Deal 1: North-South vulnerable. IMP.

Scores:
1♠: 100
Pass: 70
Double: 50
1NT: 10

1♠. The key to everything here is to find out how many spades partner holds and we will find that out soon by saying 1♠. As we have long hearts, the likelihood of finding four-card spade support opposite is quite high. Of course, partner is expecting a five-card suit but there are no real sensible alternatives to bidding 1♠.

Double. This is a very tricky case. I say double but without conviction. I think finding a 4-4 spade fit will be important, which is why I don’t advocate a 1NT overcall. Of course, if my partner responds to my double with 2♦, I won’t be happy but I will pass. If partner does say 2♦, he will nearly always have five or six cards in diamonds and the contract will sometimes be playable. Saying 1♠ with four cards is a possibility but will sometimes prevent us from playing in NT.

Interesting questions. I particularly liked the last one.
