Upgrade in the series computation

The Funbridge Series existed for several years and have not been modified since their creation.

Originally planned as the French Bridge Federation series, the up growing number of players on Funbridge result in the fact that we got away of the model, mainly when it came to the players distribution in the series. In fact the number of players in the series 1 and 2 is too important today in regard of other series.

This is why we will proceed to an upgrade in the series computation that will be in effect on June 1st, 2011.

What will be the changes?

  • The number of players in the Elite series will remain the same: 50 players in the series.
  • The 1 Spade series will now be limited to 150 players.
  • The breakdown in the other series will be done with the following percentages:

How will we proceed?

  • For the May 16 to 31 period, the displayed forecast will be calculated using new the method.
  • On June 1st we will apply the new breakdown.
  • For practical reason, there will not be game reports emails and awards for the May 16 to 31 period.

What are the consequences for the players?
Most players in series 1 and 2 are likely to move down by one, two or even three series. Only the Elites, the best players in 1 Spade and the players in the lower series will not be affected.

  1. But what have you done? What happens to the rankings? Even those who have more than 60% with 26 games is relegated to two categories. If this is so I cancel my subscription

  2. With this change of series you will not be disadvantaged compared to other players because everyone goes down of series.
    This will allow easier going up in Elite serie so far because there were too many people in the serie 1 spades.
    In addition, it will allow to stick to the ranking system of the French Bridge Federation (FFB), which is fairer and more realistic than the Funbridge’s one.
    Psychologically, the descent of series may be frowned upon but we assure you that this will not really change something.

I understand the logic behind your proposals but as the league is top heavy, a better solution would have been to add an extra level (1NT) adjusting the numbers at the top where the problem lies. The numbers in the other groups could be adjusted slightly to give the distribution you require but the changes in the niddle and lower ranks would be less severe.

    Also the 20% up / 20% down rule will not work with different sized categories and iwll eventually lead to the current problem of too many at the top. Surely the numbers moving at each level can be made flexible so as to maintain the model you are trying to achieve while keeping the competetive edge to the league.

    Lastly I will soon be extending my subscription but I would appeal for the team to give urgent attention to maintaining a system which can cope with the increasing numbers of users. The number of breakdowns and incidents of very slow play leave me frustrated and discouraged at times.

  9. I do not understand why so many people on 4 promotion atr being demoted. There wii be too high a percentage in the lowest three groups

    Adding a new serie like 1 NT was a solution but as I said to Willy48, we want to come closer to the FFB ranking which does not have a 1 NT serie.
    It is really difficult to satisfy everyone.

    I hope you will see after the 1st June that this will not fundamentally change the rankings and I hope you will still have fun on Funbridge.

  15. I challenge your comment that the restructuring does not essentially change the rankings. Some players have been disadvantaged more than others and are not now in the same relative positions despite scoring reasonably well.

  16. Why do all the old 2 diamond players have to move down to either 3NT or 3Spades, while many of the old 2 club players survive in 2 clubs. It does not make sense.

  17. Cynth> The gap down serie is related to your ranking on the period from the 15th May to the 31th. So there is the fair down for all in addition to the end of period and the move up or down of serie.

    Note that this period we don’t send a game report by email. Because it could bring even more confusion.

    Could you please create a support ticket explaining this bug of bidding and write “For Arnaud” in it. I will transfer it to our engine developers.

  18. Sorry. I looked at the rankings in the early hours of the morning. In my friends list I had been moved but others were not moved down until I looked agoin this morning. Everyone now seems to be where I would expect them to be relatively. Please accept my apologies.

  19. Does it really matter? The rankings have to be changed for Funbridge to achieve the results it wants – the games will still be competitive and people will still move up and down through the rankings. OK some of us will start from a lower rank than we would like but surely that adds to the challenge of the site and to the competitive element. It might be hard work but it should still be fun to work towards getting back to the serie we were happy on.
