Jérôme Rombaut’s interview

At what age did you embark on your journey in bridge, and what motivated you to delve into it?
I have always loved playing any board or card game (rummy, crapette, tarot, nain jaune…). I have also played chess for a long time, then I started bridge at around 14. I come from a large family. My grandfather was playing bridge and he loved playing with his children.
I really got into it with a friend during summer, when his parents bought a bridge book. We started slow at a local club once a month, then once a week the year after and I had been bitten by the bug. What is most important is that we have been lucky enough to get spotted and debut with France’s youth team almost immediately!
What is your best bridge memory?
I have always said that I have got 4 bridge memory:
- The first time I qualified for France’s Open team in 2002 opposite Michel Bessis with Michel Duguet, Philippe Toffier, Albert Bitran and Jean-Michel Voldoire as teammates.
- Our World Champion title in the Girls category in 2014 in Istanbul with Jessie Carbonneaux, Anaïs Leleu, Jennifer Mourgues, Anne-Laure Tartarin, Aurélie Thizy and Mathilde Thuillez.
- The third one is probably our 2016-2017 season with a victory at the 2016 European Championships and a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships (a narrow defeat 276-278) with Thomas Bessis, François Combescure, Cédric Lorenzini, Jean-Christophe Quantin, Frédéric Volcker and Lionel Sebbane (captain).
- Playing at an international championship and represent France with my son Léo!

Advices from the expert
Don’t try to play in a weird way. Try to be as consistent as possible.
Practise a lot to ensure mutual understanding with your partner. Do not hesitate to practise and experiment with your bridge partner to understand how he reacts after weak overcalls and pre-empts, how he gives a count signal, how he gives calls, etc. when you play together.
Most importantly, keep calm in all circumstances and have a break if needed.
What do you like most about Funbridge?
On Funbridge, my favorite game mode is the series. I’ve been in the Elite series for 248 consecutive periods, and I hope to keep this great streak going!
