Answers to January’s bidding contest!

Summary
Deal 1: North-South vulnerable, IMP scoring

Scores:
Double: 100
4♥: 80
5♣: 50
4♣: 20

Double. If I had to support clubs, I think I would prefer to say 4♣ rather than 5♣. But it is not certain that the final contract should be in that strain.
A double therefore offers far more options. Partner can pass (unlikely), bid 3NT (excellent, as the ace of clubs should mean we can make nine tricks quickly) or we could even end up finding game in hearts.

4♥. For me, the double of the Multi 2♦ shows a strong hand or a good diamond opening. North therefore has a strong hand with long clubs here, a hand stronger than a direct overcall of 3♣ over 2♦ would have described. We therefore need to find the best game, or even a slam in clubs.
Having said nothing over 2♥, I hold neither very long nor very solid hearts: I can therefore bid game in hearts, sure that partner will not pass without a fit but will fall back on 5♣. If, by any chance, he bids 4♠, I will say 6♣.
