Ranking in Open Tournaments: ELO calculation.

We are thinking of instating a new ranking system for the Open Tournaments, the ELO ranking. Inspired from chess you may learn more about it on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELO_ranking .

To make it simple, let just say that the ELO rating is based a lot on the players experience (number of deals played on Funbridge) and that an average player should have an Elo rating of 1500.00. The higher your ELO is, the better is your level of play.

The Elo calculation is done when two players compare themselves. How will this formula apply to Open Tournaments? Simply by computing the Elo formula to each possible duel in the tournament, then we will divide the result by the number of registered players minus 1.

For example, a 4 player tournament: A, B, C, and D.

Let say that you are player A; we will apply the Elo formula comparing you to all other tournament players. It gives the Elo calculation on the following duels:
A compared to B
A compared to C
A compared to D
The total of the ELO computed will be divided by 3 giving us the number of ELO points that are scored on the deal.

In case of a tie between two players, A and B: we will calculate for A the number of points Elo he would have scored for a win, the number of Elo points he would have scored for a lost, and calculate the difference between both. We consider that the player having a lower Elo, in case of a tie, should be scoring points.

Here is where we are in our thoughts on that matter. What do you think? Don’t be shy, let us know!

  1. Great idea. I thought it is impossible to establish an ELO-similar system in bridge, but in FB – where all players are playing without a human partner – it should work fine.

  2. I THINK YOU MADE A GOOD AND WISE DECISION WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE ELO SYSTEM INSTEAD OF THE FUNNYZ.
HOW IT WILL WORK OUT???? TIME AND EXPERIENCE WILL TEACH US!!!YOU CAN ALLTIME GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL SYSTEM.
    SUCCES!!!

  3. Hi,
it drives me crazy to have my left lower corner continually blocked by a message “simultaneous tournament going on”, or so, and I cannot discern my own values.
What am I doing wrong, or could you please delete that stupid announcement, please.
    Yours CHK

  4. I have just paid to play bridge on line for one month. Now I am told that I am NOT allowed to play in the games shown. Please explain

  5. I’m sure it’s a great system, but it’s totally unfair that only those who paid the hefty subscription fee can try the system. With the Funnyz at least I had a chance to play a bit, with the ELO i’m excluded. Just because I can’t afford a subscription (yes, you know, poor people like to play bridge too).

  6. this forum want only money and not to play bridge the owner wasnt not a god player european-ch maybe 1990 and not played only member i know it

  7. go to learn bridge and what is a suite you bid 4 mixed numbers i teach you DB10 6 5 is a bid not little nr.you have no alert in 4 level 4CL without a club transfer or something no its a sheet

  8. I used to play chess, this is much better idea than your curent system, which I don’t bother with as you are forced to play all the time. what should count is how good a player you are not how many times you have played !1
