In the French system, this shows between 10 and 13 HCP, a priori a balanced hand and a heart stop. With my 10 points, I have no hope for game. On the other hand, when my left-hand opponent reopens with 2&#x2665;, I absolutely have to fight for the part-score! Between us we have at least 20 points and I have a shortage in my opponents&#8217; fit. There&#8217;s no way I&#8217;m going to let them play quietly at the 2-level. No rush on the trump suit is necessary at this stage, no ruff is open and we can try to gather as much information as possible about the opponents&#8217; distributions and the location of the honours, which should enable us to find the queen of diamonds. I start by playing a spade to the dummy. East rises with the ace, West following with the 3 of spades, and plays a club back. It looks like East is 4522 from the counts provided. I win in hand and play the queen of hearts, but surprise, East does not cover! The king seems to be on the other side. Argine preferred to pass in this position and it was ill-advised as 5&#x2663; was lay-down and it let us play in 3&#x2660; =! Is this the moment to enter the sequence? The position is rather original, but here it seems essential to bid. The opponents have a diamond fit and we are (almost) guaranteed to find at least 3 spades in the dummy, West having denied 4. In most cases, he&#8217;ll even have 4 spades, and if he doesn&#8217;t, we&#8217;ll still have a ruff in the short hand in diamonds, where we have very little, as well as a very solid trump suit. For all these reasons, it is absolutely necessary to hop into  the opponent&#8217;s sequence and slip 2&#x2660;. Many of you have more quietly passed, only to be saved by partner doubling protectively.
