From the more pessimistic to the more optimistic:

Toffier: “4♠. Yes, I would have said 2♠, in anticipation of this and for several reasons. You will find out straightaway whether partner has three cards in spades. If he says 3♣, you say 3♦ and if he says 3NT, that is perfect. When forced to bid 3♦, the problem becomes unsolvable as there is no good bid. So, let us say 4♠ to pass the time; a bid which does not promise five cards in spades, of course…”

Rocafort: “4♠. That could go badly but I cannot see me unilaterally giving up on game in spades.”

Tignel: “4♠. Even at pairs, there is no question of it being passed as the 4♣ was strong (or very shapely). I am therefore continuing to describe my hand: 4♠ should show 6-5 as North has denied four cards in spades (having not bid 3♠). I would have bid 3♦ in order to better be able to show my two-suiter in case of the opponents pre-empting in 3♥ or 4♥.”

Jill Meyers: “4♠. My second suit, hoping that my partner takes me to be 6-5. I would indeed have started with 3♦.”

Hackett: “4♠. I would not have said 2♠ as then I would never be able to show my diamonds. As partner did not say 3♠, I am probably showing 6-5.”

Thuillez: “4♠. That should show 6-5 as partner has denied four cards in spades. Agree with the 3♦ bid.”

Adad: “4♠. I am describing my hand, my partner quite possibly being 3-3-1-6. By saying 4♣, partner is accepting playing in 5 in case of a misfit.”

I admit to being somewhat in agreement. If you admit that partner is bound to say 3♠ with four cards, it is hard to see what else a 4♠ bid could mean if it is not a 6-5 hand. This was not, however, the view of a significant number of experts.

Rather surprisingly, there were people who passed, probably influenced by the note about it being pairs.

Harari: “Pass. I know: it’s forcing. Nevertheless, it seems like we are completely misfitting (partner has wastage in hearts, given West’s pass at favourable vulnerability) and there is a good chance that we have no game on. At pairs, burying a game is less serious than at teams. I would indeed have bid 2♠ on the first round, a 5-3 spade fit often being difficult to find later on.”

Cronier: “Pass. The start of the sequence is mystifying. Why, if North holds a good single-suiter in clubs, did they not say 3♥ to ask for a heart stop? Why not bid 3NT themselves? And where are all the hearts? I get the impression that North nust have seven not-great cards in clubs and no doubt three cards in hearts. I do not see which contract we might be making… So I pass!”

As it happened, North held ♠K ♥AK43 ♦54 ♣AKJ875. Should they settle for 3NT? Difficult; but the pass over 4♣ would not have been ideal!

Two braver experts settled for a tiny fit.
Lorenzini: “5♣. Even at pairs, I would have started with 3♦ due to the quality of the suit. My plan would have been to say 3♠ and then 4♠ if possible. Clearly, my choice would have been different with ♠AK654 and ♦J87652. 4♣ should show a special hand with which one refuses to play in 3NT, as a 3♥ cuebid was available for playing in 3NT. Maybe seven clubs and four hearts. I do not believe that my partner may pass over 4♠ so I would have bid 5♣ to end the auction.”

Saporta: “5♣. Bidding spades at this stage would have the look if a cuebid. I would have bid 2♠ on the first round, a mess space-consuming bid.”

Finally, there were all those who preferred to confirm their good diamonds.
Lévy: “4♦. Too late for playing in spades; North will not take a 4♠ bid as natural.”

Pacault: “4♦. North would say 3♥ with a normal hand without a heart stop. This 4♣ bid shows long clubs, probably seven cards. Is it forcing? In a duplicate, yes, as 3NT has been bypassed without being investigated and 3♦ promises a follow-up bid. 4♦ has the advantage of not being forcing (repeating a suit) and of suggesting a viable contract. North will bid again if his hand allows it.”

Schmidt: “4♦. I am waiting to see my partner’s hand before I decided whether I should have said 2♠! In any case, it has — for me — become impossible to play in the suit (4♠ at this stage would never be understood as natural). No choice but to confirm the quality of the diamonds now. I will specify that 3♦ in my partnership is forcing to game.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-8f7339b" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-8-f-7339-b-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-8-f-7339-b-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
Changes of suit after a jump overcall, strong and weak rebids by opener after this change of suit: all scheduled for revision this winter…

Scores

4♠️: 100 (11 votes)
4♦️: 40 (5 votes)
5♣️: 10 (2 votes)
Pass: 10 (2 votes)
5♦️: 5 (1 vote)

Deal 2: Here we go again

A rather difficult sequence to decode. However, most guessed that North’s hand looked to be a maximum-strength balanced hand with four cards in hearts.

Kokish went through everything: “5♦. Great problem! For me, North’s double shows a strong hand without a natural bid. It will often be 18-19 balanced. Knowing whether South’s 3♥, 3♠ or 4♣ bids should be considered forcing, to avoid making a space-consuming cuebid, should be subject to partnership agreement. Especially nowadays, where responses to an opening are getting weaker and weaker! If 4♦ was the only bid available, South can pass over 4♥ unless North should have said something else with: ♠A6 ♥AK92 ♦J62 ♣AQ54. As he clearly couldn’t say anything other than 4♥, South should bid on. As 4♦ does not guarantee a diamond control, it is time to show one, hearts having been agreed as trumps.”

Lévy shared the same views on the matter: “5♦. I am betting on 18-19HCP balanced with North without wasted points in diamonds; grand slam is reaching out to us”, as did Pacault: “5♦. Even a grand slam is possible: ♠AQ6 ♥AK52 ♦J63 ♣A74”, Kerlero: “5♦. Over a 3♦ pre-empt, North does not always have three cards in spades for the double. It is the only possible call with a whole bunch of strong balanced or single-suited hands (but not a club-heart two-suiter). This would seem to be the case here: no doubt a balanced 18-19HCP hand with four cards in hearts. I have therefore pretty much decided to play in 6 Hearts but we could also be cold for 7 Hearts without a finesse…” and Cronier: “5♦. North, it seems, is holding a strong balanced hand with four hearts. By showing my diamond void, I am letting them judge his wastage in the suit. I really have too much to settle for 4♠ over 4♥ as I will make a grand slam with something like ♠A4 ♥AK52 ♦Q65 ♣AQ75.”

Eight experts, on the other hand, did not see things in this way, even though no-one was quite sure of the situation. Firstly, those who thought that 4♥ was not necessarily natural and insisted on their spades at a more or less elevated level.

Lorenzini: “4♠. My partner’s double of 3♦ shows a good hand with three cards in spades but a well-distributed minimum hand might be possible. For examplr, ♠A84 ♥3 ♦K652 ♣AQJ73. I think that 4♥ is a co-operative cue bid for spades; having shown my goods with 4♦, bidding 4♠ should now put the brakes on the auction.”

Tignel: “4♠. Double is all-encompassing, 4♦ is ambiguous (single-suited spades? Club fit? Big balanced hand?) and I take 4♥ as a cuebid (and not a suit) but I am not sure. In short, the sequence is murky… To clarify things, I am bidding my main suit. Having failed to mention my second suit, I will at least have shown slam interest, all while staying at a sensible level (North has only promised a decent hand, not necessarily lots of points).”

Saporta: “5♠. I cannot bid 5♣, which should be a natural bid. I am setting trumps and asking my partner to look at his cards.”

Toffier: “5♠. I cannot bid Blackwood without any aces. Bidding 5♣ would be very ambiguous: it could show a hand with four spades and six clubs… The 5♠ bid has the advantage of setting trumps, all while making a serious slam try.”

I admit to understanding the point of view of the spade fans but I cannot conceive of 4♥ not being natural, unless 3♥ in response to the double would have been forcing, which seems equally unlikely to me.
However, our final expert is of the opinion that 3♥ should be forcing and chose one final way to better navigate a slam.

Schmidt: “5♣. 4♦ has uselessly eaten up space (I would have bid 3♥). Once I have chosen this bid, it would not be absurd to slam on the brakes (4♠) but I do still have a lot (the sixth spade, a void, the King of Clubs…) and my partner, who should not be very short in diamonds, will consequently often have a really interesting hand. We will continue showing controls, without really knowing where that will lead us: I can see my hand but my partner might well imagine the ace of diamonds and a club shortage, which would not be the same in terms of sources of tricks.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-ff770c4" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-ff-770-c-4-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-ff-770-c-4-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
The response to opener’s support double: forcing or not? This was felt through the collection of disillusioned comments.

Tignel summarised the situation: “4♥. I do not understand the 1NT response. Sure, if partner has the opposite 6-5, that will allow us to successfully get out at the 2-level. But if they have three cards in one of my suits, we will make between ten and thirteen tricks… By the way, I feel cornered in the present auction, slam being as possible in heart as in clubs. In doubt, I am bidding a playable game.”

On this deal in the second stage of the Open Trials for the 2020 European Championships, I admit to having bid 1NT, thinking it better to be on top of the auction, and stupidly found myself in this awkward situation.
Partner had ♠KJ108754 ♥KQJ ♦Q ♣K2! Slam was bid at only one table out of seven! Some others partial to 4♥, some of them sarcastic…

Lévy: “4♥. Better late than never!” Baptiste Combescure: “4♥! But I wouldn’t have bid 1NT over 1♠, rather 2♥.”

Lorenzini: “4♥. The hand is atypical… I admit that at IMPs, I would probably have chosen a 2♥ response in order to be able to show both of my suits in the auction. Over 3♠, we now need to choose… I suggest going to the cheapest game, 4 Hearts, which requires one trick fewer than 5 Clubs does.”

Kerlero: “4♥. I would have said 1NT as 2♥ game-forcing seems a bit much to me. I am always careful when we could be in a misfit. Now, I see no other choice than 4♥. 3 Spades and 3NT could be perfectly ridiculous contracts, 4 Hearts more rarely so.”

Duguet: “4♥. I play 2-over-1 as game-forcing but here, I would have said 2♥ to play in one of my suits. 4♥ at random, now…”

Toffier showed more wisdom and less sarcasm: “4♥. One again, here, there is no truth. We could be making 4, 5 or 6 Hearts if partner holds a good fragment in hearts. And we could also go down in 4 Hearts with 6 Clubs cold… Saying 4♠ with the void wouldn’t suit me and passing seems out of the question with two aces… The right bid is the one that comes in the right place, at the right time…”

Five experts, however, chose to support with the void! Among them, Pacault: “4♠. Finding a trump suit other than spades after 3♠, which shows six good spades – but rarely solid ones – seems difficult. The misfit and South’s unbalanced hand lead me to fear bad breaks and one could pass 3♠ at pairs” and Saporta: “4♠. I have no desire to suggest these anaemic hearts. My partner might decide to pass with a singleton, thinking I have KQJ10xx.”

Finally, one final isolated but detailed opinion! Cronier: “Pass. The response to 1♠ is very difficult. It might seem shocking to bid 1NT with two six-card suits headed by aces but responding 2♥ does not necessarily promise a brighter future. It is, however, the path I would have chosen, as it is the best chance of establishing the best trump suit if we are making a game. Now, partner does not have a single-suiter in spades with eight playing tricks as they would have opened a strong artificial 2♣. I could say 4♠, of course, but the rebid does not guarantee a good suit and it seems that, non-vulnerable, the reward is not worth the risk: the chances of making a game are no bigger than the risks of getting doubled if we play in a game with only six trumps. I could also say 4♥ but North will imagine a hand with QJ106432 rather than Ace-empty-sixth!”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-a6bd2c3" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-a-6-bd-2-c-3-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-a-6-bd-2-c-3-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
A bad bid is not always prohibitive. But then again, if we did get carried away and failed to anticipate the follow-up, we still have to do our best. The jury is divided between a diamond cuebid and a semi-fit in clubs.

Rocafort: “4♦. I am not a huge fan of 3♥ which, in my world, shows that the trump suit has been definitively set. Bidding clubs would oblige me to bid again over a 4♥ bid when my partner was simply looking to play in 3NT (♠AJ102 ♥- ♦9865 ♣AK862).”

Thuillez: “4♦. It costs nothing to show the diamond control, in case we need to be going further.” Cronier: “4♦. Cue. Whatever the meaning of 3♠ (cue agreeing hearts or more-or-less natural bid, to postpone the issue), my hand is great with fitting honours in partner’s suits and the diamond shortage. Let’s wait to find out more later.”

Lorenzini expanded on his thoughts: “4♦. For me, 3♠ is an ambiguous bid. It might be a first-round control for hearts or perhaps searching for 3NT. I will not, therefore, risk showing a spade control in return, via a 3NT bid. The question now is of agreeing about the meaning of the 4♣ bid: control or club fit? Slam in clubs is makeable with ♠AJ72 ♥6 ♦73 ♣AK10652. In hearts, one trump trick will quickly be lost if partner does not hold the queen. Initially, I prefer to bid 4♦, my real control, even if it means jumping to 6♣ subsequently in order to suggest that as a contract.”

The fans of the other bid refused to give up on clubs as a trump suit and therefore preferred to show their fitting honours.
Kokish: “4♣. I would have needed the 10 of hearts to say 3♥, which strongly suggests that there is no other possible trump suit. 2♥ would have facilitated the rest of the auction. 3♠ is not a very precise bid but, as we are not going to play in 3NT, showing these club honours is an easy choice.”

Pacault: “4♣. North seems to have the ace of spades (given that I have the King-Queen) and is asking ― initially ― about a diamond stop. This singleton diamond should suffice for a club slam if North holds length in the suit (♠A752 ♥6 ♦872 ♣AK10653).”

Schmidt: “4♣. Let us wait for our partner to clarify his intentions and leave the door open for a high-level club contract, in case partner is short in hearts (♠A763 ♥4 ♦Q52 ♣AK1096, for example).

N.B. 1: If partner has six clubs and five spades (echoing Question 1), here is ‘the’ (or ‘my’, in any case) proof that we will never play in spades.
N.B. 2 (purely academic): What would 3NT mean? In one camp, the balanced hand and diamond stop fought for the 3NT bid. In the other, the lack of a spade stop and the four cards in hearts tipped the balance to the other side. Indeed, all depends on the meaning one gives to the double. Let us examine the arguments.

Tignel: “3NT. Double is obviously take-out but very fuzzy. If North has good cards, we might make 3NT (♠Q4 ♥A105 ♦73 ♣AKQ532) or 4 hearts (♠64 ♥A752 ♦7 ♣AKQ532). Given how flat my hand is, with scattered honours, game in 3NT seems more likely (and will be over with more quickly than game in a suit if it is going down!).”

Kokish: “3NT. Double is the only call which permits a 3NT contract without bidding it. For example, ♠76 ♥A3 ♦A8 ♣AK65432 or ♠Q7 ♥K53 ♦A ♣AK65432.”

Thuillez: “3NT. I have diamonds stopped. If my partner has a bit of something in spades, we could be making it.”

Toffier: “3NT. My partner’s double is not penalties. It shows a good overcall and asks South to judge their cards. This club fit and stops in the red suits might suffice for making game in NT whenever North holds a hand such as ♠Q4 ♥A5 ♦73 ♣AK86432 or ♠764 ♥AK5 ♦Q ♣AK10862.”

I have set aside Saporta‘s commentary: “3NT. My partner does not have a mountain (or the opponents are mad) and the double is the only way of getting me to suggest 3NT. I do so with my humble collection. 4 hearts and 5 clubs seem rather far off to me.”

Why did I put that to the side? Because he was the only one to notice that North can hardly have the hands suggested by the previous experts.
Indeed, with South holding 8 HCP, if North really had 16 HCP, that would leave 16 between East and West, with one having had enough to open and rebid 3♠ and the other the means to make a negative double at the 2-level. Does that not seem a bit strange to you?

It was Schmidt who revealed to us the why of the thing: “3NT. Signed and sealed since I had this hand at the table. Lacking space, double is the only possible call for expresses a wish to play in 3NT if partner has diamonds stopped: ♠K6 ♥A54 ♦7 ♣AK86532. Corollary: partner should say 4♥ with a distributional hand with four cards in hearts (♠6 ♥A1095 ♦7 ♣AK106532).”

In real life, North did indeed have the second hand and I rather agree that he should say 4♥ rather than doubling. But it was possible to suspect from the opponents’ bids that partner could never really have the first hand suggested…

Fans of bidding 4♥ were less talkative and, one gets the feeling, less confident.
Lévy: “4♥. Hoping to be on the same wavelength” as well as Hackett: “4♥. I presume that partner holds four cards in hearts.” Allavena, chattier but hardly more certain: “4♥. I know that my partner does not always have four cards in hearts but, if so, this is how they can be shown, so I say 4♥. It would be wise to pass with three good hearts and 2-3-2-6, hoping that I have five, all while suspecting that I do not (I could have said 2♥ before supporting) but also knowing that it might be the last making contract.”

Finally, to finish, two experts who preferred, and no doubt wisely, to go back to their known fit without taking any risks.
Lorenzini: “4♣. My partner’s double is, for me, initially looking for a spade stop for 3NT. This call does not guarantee four cards in hearts. My hand being minimum, I go back to the lowest level, 4♣.” Adad: “4♣. At IMPs, I neither have the courage to float 3 spades doubled, nor to jump ship to 4♥. In my view, East has little strength but 4-4 in the majors. And trying 3NT, even with six club tricks and a stop in each of the other three suits would be more of a pairs bid.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-68f23a5" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-68-f-23-a-5-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-68-f-23-a-5-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember
It is high time for one of our esteemed teachers to produce a book for us with an inventory of all the doubles in modern bridge. Partner actually had: ♠KQ98542 ♥AJ9 ♦J ♣109 and jetted off to 4 spades after a co-operative double, a contract doomed to failure.
Irene Baroni: “Pass. If I am making a game with this type of hand, partner will probably bid again.” Here, partner would reopen with 2♠ but we still weren’t close to making a game… Kerlero: “Pass. I do not want to get my partner excited if he has six spades.”

Cronier: “Pass. The only seriously imaginable game would be 3NT, with a pretty maximum partner not holding too many spades and endowed with a double-stop in hearts. To manage that, I should double (no, 2NT is not a minor two-suiter!). The risks associated with such an action are too numerous for me to undertake. Let’s instead bet that we aren’t making a high-level contract and pass smoothly, fearing a misfit. Let’s bet on the opponents already having trouble making 2 hearts!”

Schmidt: “Pass. 2NT would show a spade fit for me. In any case, even if it showed a minor two-suiter, I would say neither 3♣ nor 2NT in a teams match as I think the risk-reward ratio statistically poor. At pairs, it would be another story.”

Amongst all the other experts who could not bring themselves to pass opposite a vulnerable overcall, several options received votes but the majority chose a double to show, as usual, some strength without a natural bid.

Rocafort: “Double. First of all, the eleventh commandment: ‘You shall never let the opponents play in 2 hearts in a known fit.’ And over the inevitable 2♠ by the idiot opposite, 3♣.”

Jill Meyers: “Double. I have too much to pass but that would doubtless be more prudent with the single spade.”

Lévy: “Double. This is beautiful! 3♦ and 2NT show spade support and passing when we could line up nine tricks in NT is not very brave at this vulnerability, where the 1♥ response only promises thirteen cards nowadays.”

Lorenzini: “Double. The only option to my mind, despite the singleton spade. I do not want to pass when I could make game in clubs with my partner holding an average hand: ♠A8752 ♥872 ♦J3 ♣AK4. The 2NT bid is either natural or a spade raise, depending on conventions, but does not show the minors in this auction. The only option is double, for me; then, if partner rebids 2♠, you can then correct to 3♣. This false choice technically suggests a choice between clubs and diamonds.” supported by Duguet: “Double. Followed by 3♣ over a likely 2♠. Partner should understand that I have lots of diamonds!”

Two experts out of three opted for 2NT playing the bid as a minor two-suiter, so clearly no worries for them. But it is worth discussing it carefully in advance as it is not really the general consensus. The third was original.
Tignel: “2NT. I cannot bring myself to pass as, at this vulnerability, West could make a purely tactical 1♥ response: we could be making 3NT, 4 spades or 5 clubs (even 6). The singleton in spades puts the brakes on my take-out double. So, go to 2NT (natural), the absence of a heart stop not being prohibitive since West only has four cards in hearts.”
Why not; but all the same, if there has to be 3NT, it seems better to play it from the other hand anyway, no?

Finally, the last solution recommended is to bid the suit that, until then, had not got the chance to be mentioned.
Allavena: “3♣. Here we are again with troubles, to conclude a highly complicated series. North has some strength for his red overcall but that is no reason to punish him with a poorly timed action. I doubt that doubling with the singleton spade would be good; I would love for 2NT to show the minors but I doubt it and my style of bridge precludes passing, which is often a good call… I will definitely bid 3♣, a bit of an underbid (especially since I could not have bid 2♣ over 1♦) but frankly, I don’t see anything better.” Pacault: “3♣. With five spades, three hearts and diamonds that could be short, North seems able to have a club fit, potentially allowing us to play in game (♠A8532 ♥A72 ♦3 ♣A643).”

I will finish with Kokish‘s commentary, which does not fail to compliment the author of the contest: “3♣. Clubs and diamonds rather than two cards in spades and five clubs, a hand which would be shown by a “Snapdragon”, or “fourth-suit”, double. If North repeats the spades, he will have at least six of them and is requested to correct to diamonds with three cards and one or two clubs.
