The opponent\u2019s take-out double significantly alters the meaning of the responses to the opening bid. The fact that the opponent also has at least 12 HCP and considers more competitive bidding later leads us to bidding with a different perspective. We will study how different bids are modified in this case and how to react the most effectively possible as a function of our hand.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

After the adverse double, West\u2019s bid of a new suit on the two-level is not forcing anymore<\/strong>. It shows a hand with 7-10 HCP <\/strong>and a six-card suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given that East has a minimum and therefore not enough points to hope winning a No-trump contract, he passes without bad feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

East must inform his partner that he has a fit and a hand that is worth the equivalent to 12 points. But careful, a jump raise to the three level is a pre-empt after the opponent\u2019s double and shows a weaker hand than this one. The solution is to use the Truscott 2NT <\/strong>response. This bid usually guarantees a four-card fit <\/strong>and a limit raise with 11-12 points, including distribution<\/strong>. Knowing about the fit, West can now upgrade his hand to 16 points and readily accepts the invite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following an adverse double, the jump raise (of a major or a minor) is a pre- empt<\/strong>: it shows a weak hand and a substantial fit. This raise allows East to opt for a sacrifice on the five-level<\/strong>. The contract will certainly be doubled, or North-South will bid 5♥ (which is not lay-down).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new suit on the one-level stays forcing <\/strong>and is there to describe the hand. East cannot repeat his hearts over West\u2019s rebid of 1♠, because his partner could have a singleton there! The only bid available to him is 1NT, which shows 7-10 HCP <\/strong>and does not promise a club stopper. West, who has the minimum for his opening, has no reason to bid any further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we see here, is a bid that very precisely shows responder\u2019s hand: the conventional fit showing jump shift<\/strong>. A jump to a new suit on the three-level shows a hand with 11-14 points (including distribution), a good long suit and a four-card fit in partner\u2019s suit. Here, West has the ideal hand for a fit showing jump shift and East should not be satisfied to simply bid game. With a hand worth 18 points (including distribution), a double fit and a useful complement in diamonds, he investigates slam. When West shows his club control, there is no more stopping him!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

West dealer. North doubles and South bids clubs on the two-level if he can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the opponents have the minority of points and they don\u2019t have a fit, it is often profitable to double for penalties! This is the aim of the redouble, showing at least 11 HCP, and, as a general rule, the lack of a fit in partner\u2019s major. The redouble thus allows East to double for penalties on the next round. Careful! West must not spoil the party with an unfortunate bid that would save the opponents from going down heavily (often at least by four tricks).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
