You need to knock out the clubs, yes; you also need to decide how to play the hearts and you don\u2019t have guaranteed entries to the dummy aside from in hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In these situations, it is often a good idea to begin by playing the suit that has the clearer manoeuvre available:<\/strong> you will always need to push out the &#x2663;A at some point, so start with that. Watch the count signals: on the first round, you see LHO play the &#x2663;5; then he plays the &#x2663;10. Although this is an upward play, he might also play this way from &#x2663;10-5 doubleton to preserve the &#x2663;10. This seems especially likely when RHO follows with the &#x2663;2 on the next round: with &#x2663;9-2 or &#x2663;8-2 remaining, he would surely play the higher card to give even count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now turn to the hearts. You play the &#x2665;K and then the &#x2665;9 and notice the &#x2665;5 then the &#x2665;3 from LHO. This is definitely even and if RHO has four hearts, you are truly stuffed. If LHO has four, though, you have a chance: with &#x2665;QT53, LHO should cover the 9 to stop you running it and endplaying him later. So it looks like RHO has &#x2665;Q7 or &#x2665;T7 doubleton and you can cater for both by playing the &#x2665;A: if the &#x2665;Q doesn\u2019t drop but the 10 does, you can push out the Q by force while you still have the &#x2663;K as an entry to the dummy. You have had a very normal auction to 3NT, so making your contract is unlikely to be enough at MPs: <strong>you are going to need at least one overtrick!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Firstly, you want to encourage the opponents to keep playing clubs because you have three club stops and that will give you time to gather information in case you need to make a correct spade guess<\/strong>. Winning T1 with the &#x2663;A, &#x2663;Q or &#x2663;J will give away your strength in the suit, whereas winning with the &#x2663;K might be from &#x2663;Kxx in your hand (from LHO\u2019s point of view).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This done, take a heart finesse. Today, this will fail and RHO will play a club back (revealing that the clubs were 3-4 in the opponents\u2019 hands). After a second heart, RHO wins and plays a third club. Now, you cash two hearts, throwing two spades from your hand, and RHO follows to both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You have two possible sources for your tenth trick:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diamonds 3-3<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#x2660;K onside<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the first top diamond, LHO played the lowest spot card and RHO the third-lowest. So you should expect the diamonds to be 3-3, cashing the second of dummy\u2019s honours and then enjoying two rounds of diamonds in your hand. If they are not, it is unlikely that LHO has four as they led a three-card club suit rather than a four-card diamond suit. If RHO has four, they will be exactly 1=4=4=4, so you can cash three diamonds and the &#x2660;A, playing a second spade towards the &#x2660;Q, which LHO will have to give you an entry to your tenth trick at the end. With only five top tricks, I needed to get the clubs going before the opponents knocked out my only heart stop. So there would be no question of ducking this trick: I had to make the most probable club play now. With a difference of two vacant spaces between the two hands, I expected RHO to be more likely to hold a singleton club than LHO. Therefore, playing through him to protect against him holding the stiff ace would be a good idea; and strongly considering finessing against the &#x2663;J on the way back would be another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, it turned out that it was LHO with the singleton today! After losing one club trick, I ducked RHO\u2019s spade return to cut the communication between the opponents\u2019 hands. Now, I could safely establish a diamond trick by force, losing to LHO, the safe hand. <strong>When RHO discarded a heart on the second diamond, I knew that he had initially been 5=4=1=3<\/strong>. Here was the position as LHO returned a third heart and RHO threw another heart:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"476\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-391.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-106897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-391.png 476w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-391-300x276.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When I played the &#x2666;K next, throwing the &#x2663;K, RHO was squeezed. If he threw the &#x2663;A, I would have enough winners for my contract. If he threw a third heart, I could cash the &#x2665;A, dropping his &#x2665;K, and play a heart towards the &#x2665;J. LHO could win and cash one diamond but would then be forced to play into dummy\u2019s heart tenace for one down. Instead, RHO chose to throw a spade winner. I then played a club, pushing out the &#x2663;A.
