still has good days ahead! <br><br>Here, most experts decided to show their diamond stop, in case that was all their partner needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the summary of the situation that <strong>Duguet <\/strong>made: &#8220;3NT. I should indeed show that I have a diamond stop!&#8221;, as did <strong>Kerlero<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. I do not know exactly what he wants of me, so I shall tell him that I have diamonds stopped.&#8221; Some further thoughts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harari<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. Difficult to respond without knowing whether 3&#x2663; is a slam try or whether it might just be looking for the best game. If in doubt, with a diamond stop and hearts which are not playable opposite a singleton, I hope for some very nice clubs opposite in order to make 3NT.&#8221;<br><strong>Schmidt<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. 3&#x2660; is a very imprecise bid but it is the only one my partner has if they do not want to bypass the sacrosanct level of 3NT. I have both spades and diamonds stopped; what more could be wanted from me for now?&#8221; <br><strong>Saporta<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. My partner might be dreaming of playing in this contract but be missing a stop, holding, for example, &#x2660;A65 &#x2665;4 &#x2666;863 &#x2663;AKQJ105.&#8221;<br><strong>Allavena<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. I find this extremely complicated; I made three completely automatic bids and my fourth bid will pretty much decide everything in a big fog: if partner has &#x2660;A64 &#x2665;4 &#x2666;653 &#x2663;AKQJ54, it is urgent to bid 3NT; with &#x2660;AK4 &#x2665;4 &#x2666;J53 &#x2663;AKJ654 or &#x2660;AK4 &#x2665;4 &#x2666;653 &#x2663;KQJ1054, it is completely ridiculous. But is that a reason to say 4&#x2660; and bypass 3NT? I don&#8217;t think so.&#8221; <br><strong>Jill Meyers<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. No other bid is particularly attractive. I am hoping for six winning clubs and the ace of spades opposite.&#8221; <br><strong>Kokish<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. Very uncomfortable situation with just one diamond stop and a club void but there is nothing else I can say for now and partner can still bid again.&#8221;<br>I must admit that a 3NT bid seems logical to me. Of course, the clubs might not be winners and partner&#8217;s hearts singleton could be the queen or king, a 4-heart contract then probably being better. But may as well bid your hand and not make guesses about partner&#8217;s. We have spades and hearts stopped; that is the main takeaway in my view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were, however, a few discordant voices in this concert of 3NTs: <br><strong>Toffier<\/strong>: &#8220;4&#x2666;. North does not hold four cards in spades, otherwise they would have said 2&#x2660; over 2&#x2665;. They might therefore have a game-going hand with six or seven good, or even very good, cards in clubs. The 3&#x2660; bid shows strength in spades and the hand would then be something like: &#x2660;A64 &#x2665;2 &#x2666;63 &#x2663;AKJ10764 or stronger with master clubs. It is therefore time to show my strength in diamonds, incompatible with playing in NT.&#8221; <br><strong>Cronier<\/strong>: &#8220;4&#x2665;. Pfff! This is awful. I refuse to bid 3NT with ace-empty-third in diamonds. To make that contract, I would need the clubs opposite to be masters and an entry back (the ace of spades?). If North really has a lot of clubs, they will always be able to fall back on 5&#x2663;. Otherwise, I would no doubt have a 4-heart hand, even opposite a small singleton. For example, with this in North: &#x2660;AJ2 &#x2665;4 &#x2666;1083 &#x2663;AKJ952, I will make if I get to only lose two hearts and a spade; no other contract would have any real I seem to be showing a 5-4-3-1 hand as I did not say 3&#x2665;, so I am describing my hand well.&#8221;<br><strong>Zimmermann<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2660;. As 3&#x2666; would promise six cards.&#8221;<br><br>Hardly more numerous, those partial to 3&#x2666;, who also had convincing arguments. <br><strong>Rombaut<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2666;. The alternative would be to say 3NT but partner can still hold ace-doubleton in clubs.&#8221; <br><strong>Rocafort<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2666;. I am patient and will wait for one more round before resolving to suggest 3NT.&#8221;<br><strong>Toffier<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2666;. I have no club stop for playing in 3NT. Sure, my partner could hold the queen of clubs doubleton but it could also be two small cards in clubs&#8230;&#8221; <br><strong>Schmidt<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2666;. I am oscillating between 3NT and 3&#x2666;: my partner has heard that I said 2&#x2666; and not 2NT over the double of 2&#x2663;. 3NT at this stage should therefore hardly promise more than half a stop. On the other hand, by saying 3&#x2666;, I might hope to hear 3&#x2665; or 3&#x2660; opposite and then a 3NT bid by me would be clearer. I shan&#8217;t bid 3&#x2660; as I want to save space.&#8221; <br>The majority chose to bid 3NT, no doubt a consequence of the theorem mentioned in Problem 1. Make up your mind but I have to say that the experts found serious arguments to defend their bids. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harari<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. 3&#x2663; here is asking for a half-stop in clubs, which I have.&#8221;<br><strong>Pacault<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. North seems to be asking for a fragment of a club stop, the 2&#x2666; bid not making a serious stop envisageable.&#8221;<br><strong>Thuillez<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. We are far from a club stop but if we each have three, that could be enough. I don&#8217;t have much of an alternative.&#8221; <br><strong>Hackett<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. I think this shows half a stop. With a full stop, I could have bid 2NT earlier in the sequence.&#8221; <br><strong>Cronier<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. It seems to me that my partner has repeated fourth-suit forcing, authorising me to bid 3NT with half a stop. Or has something passed me by?&#8221; <br><strong>Chidiac<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. Interpreting the repetition of the fourth suit as a request about the presence of a half-stop in clubs, I therefore say 3NT.&#8221; <br><strong>Saporta<\/strong>: &#8220;3NT. I have shown five nice diamonds, four spades, a fragment in clubs. Sadly, 4NT is not clearly Blackwood for diamonds. Starting with 5&#x2665; followed by 6&#x2666; shows ambitions for grand slam in diamonds that partner should realise with ace-king-fifth in diamonds. And if they themselves bid 6&#x2666;? We&#8217;ll get back to you!&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two other opinions prioritised the aesthetic aspect over the practical. Let us nevertheless remember that there are not, unlike in figure skating, artistic marks to go with the technical ones. Realism and pragmatism pay off the most! <br><strong>Chidiac<\/strong>: &#8220;5&#x2665;. Small slam in diamonds is almost guaranteed and considering a grand-slam try would be a sensible approach. It is completely reasonable to opt for a practical 6&#x2666; bid (the minimum option after a pre-empt). However, always sticking to my nature, the risk\/reward ratio obliging, I opt for cuebidding 5&#x2665;.&#8221;<br><strong>Toffier<\/strong>: &#8220;5&#x2665;. Response which solves nothing since I do not see how my partner can bid grand slam if they hold ace-king of diamonds and the king of spades. I nevertheless think that a 5&#x2665; cuebid is more appropriate than a direct jump to 6&#x2666;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who play that 4NT here is Blackwood for diamonds, no worries. I just hope that they have not adopted this situational bid in order to get rid of this problem easily&#8230;<br><strong>Schmidt<\/strong>: &#8220;4NT. It is written in full in my system that when our side has opened and the level of the bidding has left no space, 4NT is Blackwood, necessarily for diamonds here.&#8221; <br><strong>Kerlero<\/strong>: &#8220;4NT. As I am a simple soul, I do not see too much how this could be anything other than Blackwood for diamonds. We could be claiming in 7 opposite five diamonds to the ace-king and the king of spades.&#8221;<br><strong>Allavena<\/strong>: &#8220;4NT. I really want to bid 6&#x2666; but that could be ridiculous (&#x2660;K43 &#x2665;K62 &#x2666;QJ43 &#x2663;QJ7) and why would we not have 7 Diamonds on the table (&#x2660;K43 &#x2665;652 &#x2666;AK432 &#x2663;J75)? I would like to be certain that 4NT is Blackwood; it is likely and it is the only sensible bid I can find. so 4NT.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only three experts chose, to my great dismay, to make the same pragmatic bid as my partner on this deal from the Open Trials. I am in complete agreement with them, even though it was not greatly successful here, North having AQ43 in diamonds and East KJ8. Without any agreements, I obey by bidding 2&#x2660;, which could turn out to be a waiting bid if partner rebids but which, sure, could be definitive. I wonder whether any of our experts have already developed some effective system against this very weak 1NT bid that they could publish in <em>Le Bridgeur<\/em>.&#8221;<br><strong>Toffier<\/strong>: &#8220;2&#x2660;. After a mini 1NT opening, transfer overcalls are very &#8220;flexible&#8221; and could be anything from 7-8 HCP (&#x2660;AK10732 with nothing else) up to much stronger hands. If my partner cannot produce a game try over 2&#x2660;, we&#8217;ll stop there.&#8221;<br><strong>Hackett<\/strong>: &#8220;2&#x2660;. A bit conservative but we are non-vulnerable and my partner could have doubled with a strong hand.&#8221; <br><strong>Allavena<\/strong>: &#8220;2&#x2660;. I almost want to say: what so you want from me? My philosophy is that an overcall can be &#8220;light&#8221;, so by inference, we do not punish a partner who has dipped a toe in. And with two small spades, I am settling for 2&#x2660;.&#8221;<br><strong>Harari<\/strong>: &#8220;2&#x2660;. I can&#8217;t see anything better, without a proper fit. I play 2NT as natural in these situations (perhaps wrongly&#8230;), which would be my second choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This question of the meaning of a 2NT bid is clearly the one we ought to have been discussing, even though many of the experts don&#8217;t seem to have done so:<br><strong>Schmidt <\/strong>: &#8220;2NT. Cuebid. I admit that I have not set out any responses. Nobody is perfect.&#8221;                                                       <strong>Cronier<\/strong>: &#8220;2NT. Cuebid. I have too much strength to settle for 2&#x2660; and my suits are not good enough to bid at the 3-level. I can hardly see anything other than a 2NT cuebid for handling all that.&#8221; <br><strong>Kokish<\/strong>: &#8220;2NT. Artificial and forcing. Otherwise, I prefer a jump to 4&#x2660; in offence. From my point of view, a direct overcall over a mini NT should be constructive. Playing transfers, we could even have a canap\u00e9 hand (four spades and a longer minor). Hence the importance of playing 2NT as forcing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there was the group who did not want to bury their hearts. <br><strong>Kerlero<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2665;. Forcing. Very annoying&#8230; but North has promised close to an opening (otherwise, this is unmanageable), so we are en route to game. Which? We&#8217;ll see.&#8221; <br><strong>Pacault<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2665;. Over a natural 2&#x2660;, I would have bid 3&#x2665;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, two experts chose to use a second transfer to make the auction even more malleable: <br><strong>Rocafort<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2666;. Sorry for not using my own system, since I don&#8217;t have one, not being adept at this form of defence against NT. If, as is more likely, partner thinks to have struck gold in spades, it will be time to take clubs out of their box.&#8221; <br><strong>Saporta<\/strong>: &#8220;Double. I am taking a chance to play in 3NT before, if North disappoints me with spades, taking refuge in clubs.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very well; but rather unsatisfying, especially for partner, who held AQ107 in spades and A102 in hearts. What should he do? The result in the Trials too was an avalanche of 5 Clubs minus one with a bulletproof 3NT contract on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others went for a minority pick: <br><strong>Kokish<\/strong>: &#8220;4&#x2665;. Of course, 3NT could be the last playable game but doubling and passing 3NT would be too unilateral with a hand that could easily be able to produce slam opposite: &#x2660;KQ63 &#x2665;AQ3 &#x2666;3 &#x2663;106532.&#8221;<br>On the real deal, this dream hand was not really in the picture but with jack-doubleton heart, it seemed dangerous to want to get too high all the same. So, it is time for us to unveil &#8220;the right convention&#8221;. <br><strong>Combescure<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2660;. In my system, this shows a hand without four spades which is looking for a stop.&#8221;<br><strong>Zimmermann<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2660;. I do not have spades. Double would promise at least four spades. The Bible according to St Krzysztof Martens.&#8221; <br><strong>Thuillez<\/strong>: &#8220;3&#x2660;. Here, to my (lack of) knowledge, is a gaping hole in our standard system: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>3NT is probably the right contract, as there is probably something in hearts opposite; but saying 3NT is very (ir)responsible and it would surely be better played the other way around.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double is tempting. If partner says 3&#x2660;, we say 3NT and have at once denied spades and a heart stop. But if they bid 4&#x2660;, which is allowed, what do we do?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We would actually need (an invention I am just now writing but others have no doubt already developed a schema for) for a double to show spades (four or five, limit plus) and for 3&#x2660; to be in the spirit of Rubensohl (1NT-2&#x2665;-3&#x2660;), a &#8220;dustbin&#8221; bid: I have some strength, no heart stop and do not have four cards in the other major. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As what I just wrote seems nice and in order to see what my friends think of it, I am therefore opting for 3&#x2660;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you know the term &#8220;serendipity&#8221;?
