Currently ranked <strong>271<sup>st<\/sup> in the live world rankings<\/strong>, this German player showed his determination throughout the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the outset, he faced some formidable opponents. In the third round, he met <strong>Jirka Bal\u00e1\u0161<\/strong>, aka <strong><em>jirka_B<\/em><\/strong>, ranked <strong>52<sup>nd<\/sup><\/strong> in the BP live rankings. Despite the difference in level on paper, Volker kept calm and won. Later, in the sixth round, it was our ambassador <strong>Luc Bellicaud<\/strong> who crossed his path. Playing against <strong>Mirek Bia\u0142o\u017cyt<\/strong>, aka <strong><em>Mireq B<\/em><\/strong>, he found himself <strong>33-0<\/strong> down on deal 11, but the German bridge player had not said his last word. Was it a goal you set yourself from the outset?<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you sign up for the Bridge Cup, your initial aim is to go as far as possible and, of course, if things go well, to win the tournament. But to say that my initial &#8220;objective&#8221; was to win the tournament is a step I don&#8217;t take. 10 rounds is long. There are lots of decisions to make, talented opponents and a very solid partner, Argine, but without the granularity of a partner with whom you have a fit and you have worked on certain specific sequences that can make all the difference. As you progress in the tournament, the objectives become clearer, right up to the final, where de facto the aim is to win the tournament. It was a great final. Fabien played well, but &#8211; we talked about it &#8211; without much inspiration. I played a solid match with the result we all know. I have to admit that this victory also had a special flavour because Herv\u00e9 Huntz brought the Cup to Belgium in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few Belgian friends on Funbridge had put the pressure on to keep the Cup in Belgium. A few nice, quirky messages of encouragement, right in our DNA, were an extra incentive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-palette-color-1-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-64c82544b9d05c769d033298a1d6b8cf\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-palette-color-1-color\"><strong>Can you tell us about your bridge <\/strong><\/mark>journey?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I started playing bridge in 1996. I played 3 seasons in the championship for my local club, Namur, then two seasons in the first division for the Perron Club in Li\u00e8ge with a partner who was as talented as he was patient. <strong>&#x1f642;<\/strong> Two-time silver medallist in the Belgian championship. Then my professional career and family took over. I think the last time I sat down &#8211; seriously &#8211; at a bridge table was in 2003. I hardly ever played again until I discovered Funbridge in 2022. The platform is super user-friendly &#8211; I&#8217;m not getting paid to write that &#x1f642; &#8211; and I started playing more regularly again. I even won the French Individual Championship in October in the Performance category. When you love this game, you quickly fall back into your addictions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-palette-color-1-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-77707650238396c3f8feef3e424cc8eb\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-palette-color-1-color\">What an incredible journey! &#x1f31f; What was the most memorable or decisive moment for you during this competition?<\/mark><\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The last deal of the third round. 3NT played from the right hand and a good reading of the cards. It was about time because 7NT for -1 instead of 7H (even though my opponent stopped in 6H) for -17 IMPs on the third deal, that puts a bit of pressure on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-palette-color-1-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8477c27c278aceb8aba7680840b0e455\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-palette-color-1-color\">Speaking of pressure, when you reached the final, were you rather impatient to face Fabno, currently No. 1 in the BP live rankings, or did you feel a little apprehensive?<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At this stage of the competition, all your opponents &#8220;hold their cards&#8221;. I knew it was going to be a great match and I had to be solid. I had to make the right decisions and not to play too agressively. Fabno never lets an opportunity go by. I played quite solidly. One big mistake out of 16 deals in a contract of 3NT that was almost impossible not to give away and the result was there. But it&#8217;s clear that I didn&#8217;t start with the odds in my favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-palette-color-1-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c8adc010322fb6a155087756740d5784\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-palette-color-1-color\">Do you regularly participate in Funbridge tournaments? One last piece of advice, or rather a suggestion, a little message after a match is really nice. Playing online with Argine doesn&#8217;t prevent you from doing so. That&#8217;s what the chat is for. Strategies and crucial choices, discover her analysis and see the game from a different angle!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 7:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>Fabrice let play in 2&#x2660; -1 and cashed 100, while Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric took nine tricks in 3NT for +600.<br><strong>The difference was in the opening bid.<\/strong> Sitting South, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric decided to open 1&#x2665; in first hand, <strong>despite vulnerability and the fact that he only had eleven points. <\/strong>The reasons for opening: no wasted points in the doubleton spade, and if the opponents find a spade fit, it will become difficult to describe your long hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>So Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric was able to bid 3NT in an uncontested auction, which won provided that you ducked the heart lead twice. Over 2&#x2665;, Argine bid 3NT with a minimum hand and no fit known. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric then upgraded his <strong>sixth diamond<\/strong>, which still left a fit possibility, as well as his <strong>16 nice points<\/strong>. He only had one loser in diamonds, and he held <strong>ace-king<\/strong> of hearts in the side suit and the<strong> king-doubleton in clubs<\/strong> in his partner&#8217;s suit. These elements prompted him to bid again after 3NT, naturally describing his hand with the 4&#x2666; bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Argine could calm the game with the 4NT bid<\/strong>, which was not a Blackwood in this situation but a <strong>negative and non-forcing bid<\/strong>. But his promising performance suggests that he has a bright future with Team Funbridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the <strong>Funbridge ambassadors, Nikolas Bausback <\/strong>went the furthest this time. His journey came to an end in the <strong>round of 32<\/strong>, after a tournament marked by close matches and great consistency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But his adventure could have ended much sooner. In the <strong>round of 64<\/strong>, he faced <strong>Westcott Bay<\/strong> in a hotly contested duel. The two players finished on a perfect <strong>17-17<\/strong> tie, and in the end it was the stopwatch that decided the final outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nikolas Bausback<\/strong> also distinguished himself by his precision in slams. A lucky number for this intrepid bridge player! &#x1f340;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s now move on to the <strong>memorable matches<\/strong> of this edition, those which saw players with notable performances go head-to-head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>A gala match<\/strong> &#x2b50;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the round of 64, the match between Bulgaria&#8217;s <strong>Sergey Ivanov<\/strong>, aka <strong><em>Dao Ph<\/em><\/strong>, and Britain&#8217;s<strong> <em>Grazhaz<\/em><\/strong> lived up to all expectations. Both players put in impressive performances, with <strong><em>Dao Ph<\/em><\/strong> averaging <strong>64.26%<\/strong> and <strong><em>Grazhaz<\/em><\/strong> <strong>64.41%<\/strong>, the latter also averaging an impressive <strong>4.06 IMPs<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The duel was particularly hotly contested, with each deal providing its dose of suspense. In the end, <strong><em>Grazhaz<\/em><\/strong> won by a hair\u2019s breadth on a score of <strong>38-36<\/strong>. However, in his very first match, he surprised everyone with a <strong>33-18<\/strong> victory over <strong><em>Diamond7<\/em><\/strong>, an <strong>Elite series player<\/strong> with over <strong>142,000 deals <\/strong>to his credit. Led <strong>28-3<\/strong> until deal 12, J\u00e9r\u00f4me never gave up and geared up towards the end of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In just four deals, he turned the tide, scoring 28 points.
