Unfortunately, 3&#x2666; shows a weaker hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A 2NT rebid better describes my strength and distribution. The danger was to receive the spade lead. I did not have the stop, my opponents had a fit in spades since North&#8217;s 2&#x2666; denied 4 cards in the suit. The opening leader had spade length.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I took the risk as the 1&#x2665; opening strongly encouraged a heart lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I was right. I easily took 10 tricks on the heart lead for 180. Those playing in a minor could not score more than 130. North, with a small hope for slam, started with a 3&#x2666; cuebid before showing me a fit in spades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The defence cashed the ace and king of diamonds on the lead before playing a third round of diamonds. <strong>Watch out for the over-ruff!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bidding showed that the opening leader held 6 cards in diamonds and on the right, they marked the doubleton diamond for count. The over-ruff was certain. <strong>You must ruff high.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest was easy. I played trumps in three rounds and started establishing the hearts. The hand was nice, but <strong>I don&#8217;t like to open too &#8220;light&#8221; at pairs<\/strong>. When my partner overcalled with 2&#x2666;, my hand significantly gained value and I ended up thrusting a game at the 5-level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I started by jumping to 3&#x2660;. Opposite an overcall and after a passed hand, this is a <strong>fit-showing bid<\/strong>. It showed 5 cards in spades and a big fit in diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Remember: Don&#8217;t rush the bidding if you don&#8217;t know the trump suit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other bids were possible: a cuebid, a jump in diamonds and a change of suit with 2&#x2660;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I chose 3&#x2660; for several reasons:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It describes my hand in one bid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is always an interesting pre-emptive effect in a competitive auction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I don&#8217;t like fit-showing bids for reasons I won&#8217;t explain today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Over 4&#x2666;, I raised again with 5&#x2666;. My hand was too good, I imagined I could win the game opposite a minimum overcall.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My partner only had 5 cards in diamonds and 12 HCPs, but our hands complemented each other well. The trumps were 2-2 and the spade finesse worked. In the end,<strong> I took 12 tricks by establishing the long spade suit via a ruff and scored 97%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:54px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Deal<\/strong><\/strong> 4: Because I wanted to<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-b6a4ba5\" data-block-id=\"b6a4ba5\"><style>.stk-b6a4ba5 .stk--block-align-b6a4ba5{align-items:center !important;}<\/style><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk--block-align-b6a4ba5 stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-b6a4ba5-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-748a7d3\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"748a7d3\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-748a7d3-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-748a7d3-inner-blocks\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"966\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-diag4_EN-1024x966.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112056\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-diag4_EN-1024x966.png 1024w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-diag4_EN-300x283.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-diag4_EN-768x724.png 768w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-diag4_EN.png 1164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-4523888\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"4523888\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-4523888-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-4523888-inner-blocks\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"742\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-bid4_EN.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112057\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-bid4_EN.png 1000w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-bid4_EN-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/domino-avril-bid4_EN-768x570.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You could exceptionally open 1&#x2666; with this hand that vaguely resembles a two-suiter but <strong>&#8220;anything looking like NT must be opened in NT&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the opponents&#8217; 2&#x2665;, I had no desire to pass for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I had nothing in hearts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I had a potential contract in spades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I was not vulnerable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was possible that North could not make a protective bid over 2&#x2665;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unfortunately, I had no bid at my disposal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The double showed hearts because 2&#x2665; is artificial. 2&#x2660; showed 5 cards.<strong> I felt like bidding 2&#x2660;\u2026<\/strong> The problem when you do that at the table and it brings you a top is that you generate suspicion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I sometimes anticipate and apologise, saying &#8220;I had counted a club with the spades!&#8221;. It is better to be seen as someone who doesn&#8217;t see things clearly than as a rogue. <strong>On Funbridge, no worries, my opponents don&#8217;t complain. I can do anything I want and it is quite enjoyable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I bid 2&#x2660;. Argine was passive in West and passed with 7 master hearts! Argine was a bit shy and settled for the game in hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I won the lead with the king of clubs and there were two lines of play:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Running the jack of clubs by discarding a diamond loser. The 10 of clubs gets established and allows me to get rid of the second diamond loser. The spades will be ruffed in dummy. Fearing a bad split, I chose the other option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working on the diamonds with a finesse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I started by playing dummy&#8217;s queen of spades covered by the king. In spades, everything was fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I had to handle the diamonds. I played a small diamond to the queen with a simple finesse. Play small towards what you hope to establish. This is the classic technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be careful, here the forcing finesse which consists of starting from dummy&#8217;s queen of diamonds is technically wrong.
