Borderline take-out doubles are always less appealing when you do not have four cards in the unbid major.

I also ruled out 2D because my suit quality was terrible. I was balanced with 15 HCP and a spade stop, so 1NT was technically true; the downside to be aware of is that your stop is not ideal – for two reasons:

It is easy for the opponents to knock it out quickly, before you are really ready to win the trick.

You wrong-side the contract if partner holds Queen-third.

Luckily, when dummy came down, I found that my partner had the perfect King-third spade holding; I had two stops and the luxury of choosing when and whether to duck.

I chose to duck Trick 1 to help cut communication between the defenders, knowing from the bidding that they were both on the lower end of their bids: in order for LHO to have any sort of raise, even a stretched one, RHO could not even have 12 HCP and had clearly opened light in third seat. I knew from the lead and seeing the queen pop up on my right that the spades were 3-5 with the SJ on my left and the SQT on my right, so RHO’s spades were not even good quality. That had to mean that the HCP were almost exactly split with 4-5 on my left and 10-11 on my right. If I ducked and RHO continued with spades, I was fine; and a switch would help me out. The duck had the bonus effect today of rectifying the count for a squeeze.

After the spade return, the next job was to make a correct guess in diamonds. The probabilities favoured LHO having more diamonds than RHO as they had more non-spade vacant spaces in their hand, so finessing LHO for the DT seemed like the correct play. To help me out, I tried a cheeky play of the D8 to hopefully induce a cover from LHO. The DT popped up (though not for that reason today) and I covered, RHO winning the DK. When a diamond was returned, I was given the tempo and the knowledge that RHO held both the HK and CQ for the opening bid.

When LHO played a third spade, I won in the dummy perforce, throwing a club, and played a heart to the HQ, seeing RHO show an odd number of hearts. Therefore, their initial shape was either 5=3=3=2 or 5=3=2=3. Cashing the third diamond told me which and I no longer needed to squeeze RHO once I knew their initial club holding had been Queen-doubleton. Having said that, RHO did make things easier for me by discarding a club on the fourth diamond rather than a spade winner – if I had not been counting, I might have made a mistake by taking a club finesse.

After the fourth round of diamonds, I did not cash the fifth immediately: just good technique to cash the CK first to check that the hand was what I thought it was, as otherwise, one might discard incorrectly on the fifth diamond.

Ten tricks earned me 96.28%; as it happened, nine tricks would have been almost as much today since lots of people went down in the contract!

Hearts or NT?

Partner’s 2N bid over my cue put me in a tricky position: according to Argine’s descriptions, I had not shown three hearts with the 2C bid and partner was showing 12-14 HCP, so we could still have 25 HCP between us! That meant that it might be right to play in 2NT, 3H, 3N or 4H!

Decision 1: Hearts or NT? I went for NT, as my hand, with its 3=3=4=3 shape, had no ruffing value whatsoever, with its values scattered across the suits and stops in both of the opponents’ suits. Looking at the “quacky” values (meaning that most of my HCP were in Qs and Js rather than As and Ks), it did not even necessarily seem likely that we would make 3NT if partner had 14 – and we would certainly be in a terrible game if partner had 12 or 13. So, I decided to pass: the winning action, as we could make at most 8 tricks in both hearts and NT today.

Trick 1 told me, from a combination of the fourth-highest spade lead and the SQ holding the trick, that LHO held Kxxx and RHO xxx. Given that LHO had four spades but had failed to bid over 1H, it looked almost certain that they were balanced (they were not today but presumably felt that being 4=4=1=4 with a singleton in their partner’s suit meant they would be better off defending against a heart contract). I therefore decided not to worry about the awkward case where they held stiff HA (the hearts would almost always be 3-2) and played a heart to the king and ace; I couldn’t really afford to cross to my hand.

The DJ was covered with the DK and won by the DA on my right; a spade return followed, confirming my hypothesis about the spade layout. I chose to rise with the ace: ducking here could never cost the contract but would prevent me from any potential endplays of LHO for 9 tricks later, as I would not have anything to throw LHO in with later if the hearts were indeed 3-2. As it happened, the hearts were 4-1 anyway, so only 8 tricks were available: I just needed to make sure I unblocked the DT before crossing to dummy’s HJ and cashing the DQ, safe once I knew that RHO had no entries.

With most people playing in hearts, 2NT making was a great score: 84.75%. Some people were lucky and the defence allowed them to make nine tricks in 2H; but on correct defence with only eight tricks available, NT was the better spot to play in.

Dizzying heights

Alert : 2♣, 2♥, 3♠, 4♣, 4♦, 4NT, 5♦

Well done if you bid a slam here: since we only had 28 HCP between us, it wasn’t an easy one to find! Once partner showed hearts, it was worth a shot to explore with my hand: the heart fit made my hand better, with only useful HCP and a source of tricks in diamonds. A very pure hand, with only the clubs a question mark.

Note that 3S is not a splinter: it is an artificial slam try in the major partner bid (similarly, 1N – 2C* – 2S – 3H* is an artificial slam try in S). Since 4C and 4D are splinters, 3S with either be a balanced slam try or contain a spade shortage. The club cue was good news for my hand but not enough to commit to slam; however, after my return diamond cue, partner’s sign-off made it look as though partner was loaded in clubs but without too much in spades (not the case today, as it happened!) This made me judge the hands to be fitting well and I therefore asked for keycards; when partner said 0 or 3, I knew that it could not be 0 since they had co-operated with my initial slam try and so bid 6H.

There are two ways of making 6H here: either by finding D 3-3 or one of the two club honours onside. I wanted to take both chances, so I started by testing the diamonds. When I saw the high-low count signals, I should have taken a club finesse straightaway while in the dummy. That would have simplified the play.

As it happened, I tried a third diamond and ruffed in hand. Then, I crossed back to dummy with the HQ and took the club finesse. A club return went 9 – Q – A and I now needed either the C 3-3 or for the person with the third trump to also have the four-card club holding. I ruffed a spade, ruffed a diamond and cashed the HK. Now, when I played a club to the 8, my only entry to dummy, I could draw the final trump when that held and had the fifth diamond as my twelfth trick.

Notice how the SK didn’t actually provide any worth in the end and just got discarded on my diamond winner: this is indicative of the value being wasted, reflecting my judgement in the bidding that fewer spade values in partner’s hand would be a good thing. If partner had had the CK instead, the slam would have had much more play!

Making twelve tricks today was always good, so well done to those of you who did. Bidding and making the slam was a very big result, of course: 91.78%.

What did you think of India’s analysis?

Share your opinion in the Comments section below.

[14895,14893
14042,14481
13331,13334
post-112375","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-deals-analysis","category-funbridge-news","tag-analyse","tag-bridge-news","access-premium-en","access-premium-plus-en
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
