A rule that is set in stone: When you open the six-card minor with a 6-5 minor-major, then you always have to show your five cards in the major. Else, open 1♥ or 1♠.

2NT after a reverse two-suiter is indeed conventional. It allows the pair to come to a halt below game if opener has a minimum, 17-18HCP. It’s also used to specify responder’s point range in case of a later bid in No-Trump. Indeed, a direct jump by responder to 3NT after a reverse two-suiter shows 9 (good) – 12/13 points without an honor in partner’s suits. But you may be right.”

Verdict

A classic addition of errors, one in judgment, one technical. North is right when he says that 3• is non-forcing, with 8-10HCP and five or six cards. But he’s wrong to pass. For simple proof, remove the Ace of Diamonds from the South hand and 5 Clubs is still lay-down. At the very least, North owes his partner a bid “of politeness” and must say 4♣ over 3♣, better judgment than to go looking for a Diamond stopper to play 3NT.

South did indeed do well not to bid 3NT; not only is the contract doomed but also his side has time to think about it later. He must, however, know a simple and very useful rule: no natural bid in response to a take-out Double is forcing, no matter the level on which it’s made. Before showing his Clubs, he must first cue-bid 2♦, which, let’s remember, isn’t reserved for the search for a 4-4 fit in a major. With North’s hand, there is no question of passing. He has no guarantee of beating 4 Spades, favorable distribution and ideally placed honors for bidding on to the five-level (and even hoping to make the contract!). North must remove the Double to 4NT or 5♥. What South says is not wrong, but his Double may come from a totally different hand like ♠84 ♥K1087 ♦K32 ♣A965.

Here, South, who holds a 6-5, must take his responsibilities and bid 4NT in order to impose a contract at the five-level, either in Hearts or Clubs. And never mind the marginal case where both sides go down in their contract. There is much more to be gained than lost, not to mention that the opponents can still bid on to 5♠. This is called minimizing the cost of error. In competitive high level auctions, it’s a small mistake to bid on just to find out that both contracts go down once. But letting the opponents play a making contract when your side would also make your contract is an error that costs too much.

The bid responsible for the accident:
North’s Pass facing the take-out Double.

The correct auction:

But why bid 5♦ over 4NT and not directly 5♥? Because 4NT can be bid with distributions other than a two-suiter in the remaining two suits. It simply suggests that there are several possibilities for a final contract.

For example, with ♠2 ♥K3 ♦Q105 ♣AJ98754, South knows that he must not let 4 Spades be played but he doesn’t know if it’s better to play 5 Clubs or 5 Diamonds. Imposing one of these two suits by bidding 5♣ or 5♦ over 4♠ is not the best solution. He should bid 4NT. By bidding 5♦ over 4NT, North shows that he is allergic to 5 Clubs and suggests that he supports a return to Hearts.

What did you think about this article?

Share your opinion in the Comments Section!

A very poor contract.
