I even know experts who would open a pre-emptive 3&#x2666; with South&#8217;s hand! I wouldn&#8217;t recommend this atypical pre-empt on Funbridge, Argine isn&#8217;t well prepared to react opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In third seat, if you have enough to overcall, open!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the balancing seat over 2&#x2660;, my 3&#x2663; bid is more questionable. The timing can be bad. I made it for two reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>When no one is vulnerable, it is rarely a good idea to let your opponents play in a 2-major contract at pairs if a fit has been shown.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My partner can have a good hand and several clubs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Except I didn&#8217;t take into account that my opponents&#8217; sequence, when overcalling, doesn&#8217;t guarantee a fit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My 3&#x2663; reopening bid then became much more uncertain since the opponent&#8217;s 2&#x2660; bid was not necessarily a good contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a good fit, I couldn&#8217;t make 3&#x2666; and you could take 2&#x2660; down. The highest card among three small clubs. I decided to open 2&#x2660; half-heartedly, despite the presence of the two minor kings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Argine&#8217;s 3&#x2663; response is natural and forcing, and often shows a club misfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My hand was ultra maximal, I could picture a slam in clubs. So I cue bid East&#8217;s 3&#x2665; overcall with 4&#x2665;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, Argine didn&#8217;t see me as having such a nice hand and stopped at 4&#x2660; with its singleton. I obeyed. Otherwise he would have led top of sequence. He doesn&#8217;t have &#x2663;T9 either for the same reasons. So declarer has K96, Q96, KT6 or QT6 in clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a potential urgency to cash the ace and king of diamonds. In the long run, diamond losers can be discarded on established clubs or spades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it is often wrong to play away from your king when you see the queen in dummy, I took my courage in both hands and switched to diamonds. Since I knew that East couldn&#8217;t have both honours in spades, this made my choice easier. If East played an honour on the first trick, I would know where the second is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, opener had the spade honours and I could easily take them. You have to give yourself the chance to take a heavy penalty, even at the 1-level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Argine didn&#8217;t think so and bid 1&#x2665; over my redouble, showing a weak opening. From then on, inviting to game through 2NT was useless since Argine would decline the invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to &#8220;gamble&#8221; with 3NT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My contract seemed to be in trouble. I could see eight tricks only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ducked the first two rounds of clubs and the doubler cashed the king of spades, which I ducked again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>East returned a small spade and I had the right hunch. I need to find a fit quickly before the bidding comes back to me at 4&#x2665;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system has no two-suited overcall showing spades and diamonds on the 1&#x2663; opening. If I overcall 1&#x2660;, I will have trouble finding the diamond fit and vice versa.
