seems to make the sequence more complicated, because the goal of this artificial bid is not always clear immediately.<br>Let&#8217;s analyze the start of the auction to understand everybody&#8217;s calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u203a South made a take-out Double: he has the values of an opening bid and at least three cards in the three other suits (sometimes only two in a minor) or a strong hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u203a North used the cue-bid, showing a good hand (at least 11 points) and a problem on the way to bidding game. The cue-bid in this situation asks partner to describe his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-2b7610f\" data-block-id=\"2b7610f\"><style>.stk-2b7610f {height:25px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong>hand 1<\/strong> &#8211; &nbsp;13 HCP and a five-card Spade suit &#8211; North would be certain to have a fit and the necessary points to play game, so he should have immediately signed off in 4&#x2660;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hand 2 and 3<\/strong> only have four Spades, so North cannot be sure about an eight-card fit and cannot jump to 4&#x2660;. It is thus normal to start with a cue-bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hand 4<\/strong> on the other hand has six Spades, but it is too strong for a sign-off&#8230; slam is still possible! Again, it is necessary to start with a cue-bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u203a South responded 2NT to the cue-bid. He didn&#8217;t know what his partner&#8217;s problem was: only four Spades, no Heart stopper or a hand with too many points for anything else? The most important thing is the search for a fit in the major, so that must have been South&#8217;s priority. When he bid 2NT, he promised the Heart stopper, but he also denied four Spades!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When South denies four Spades, there is no point in North showing four Spades. Therefore, <strong>hands 2<\/strong> and <strong>3<\/strong> cannot correspond to the given auction.<br>With <strong>hand 2, <\/strong>North must raise to 3NT when he learns about his partner&#8217;s Heart stopper.<br>With <strong>hand 3<\/strong>, North must say 3&#x2666; to show Diamond length and an interesting hand. Otherwise, he would sign off at 3NT!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-845e8ad\" data-block-id=\"845e8ad\"><style>.stk-845e8ad {height:25px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the hand we are looking for is <strong>hand 4<\/strong>: North thinks about playing a slam. South could hold: &#x2660;K72 &#x2665;A8 &#x2666;J632 &#x2665;KQ53. North, who cannot bid Spades immediately because that would be non-forcing, started with a cue-bid. He then bid Spades, which promises at least five cards since South denied four. And why does North not jump to game when he knows about a fit?
