Disadvantage: you only have one stopper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2&#x2663; : an overcall at the two-level often comes with a six-card suit, but it is tolerated with a very good five-card suit. Disadvantage: because of the balanced distribution, your hand is a priori more adapted to a No-trump contract than a Trump contract.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Double: it is preferable to have four Hearts for a Double, but the presence of only three cards is not prohibitive when you have added values. Disadvantage: you risk playing Two Hearts or Two Diamonds in a 4-3 fit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>None of these calls is shocking but my preference goes to the 1NT bid, which has the merit of allowing you to play a good part-score contract in One No-Trump or Two Hearts (if North makes a transfer), but also of immediately <strong>establishing the distribution and strength of the hand<\/strong> and thus facilitating subsequent developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1NT : <span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">20 points.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Double : <\/strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><strong>14 points.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2&#x2663; : <span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">10 points.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After your 1NT overcall West raises his partner to 2&#x2660;, and your partner bids 3&#x2666;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-9281a5c\" data-block-id=\"9281a5c\"><style>.stk-9281a5c .stk-img-wrapper{width:50% !important;height:300px !important;}@media screen and (max-width:689px){.stk-9281a5c .stk-img-wrapper{width:89% !important;height:177px !important;}}<\/style><figure><span class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-115216\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bon-parcours-aout-bid_EN.png\" width=\"1000\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bon-parcours-aout-bid_EN.png 1000w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bon-parcours-aout-bid_EN-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bon-parcours-aout-bid_EN-768x470.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/span><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-152086b\" data-block-id=\"152086b\"><style>.stk-152086b {height:10px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you interpret the 3&#x2666; bid?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>If you play Rubensohl, it&#8217;s a transfer to Hearts, with at least a competitive hand. But if you play Lebensohl, the bid is natural and game forcing (to play 3 Diamonds, it would be necessary to start by bidding 2NT, a puppet to 3&#x2663;). So what is the correct answer? The important thing to know is that when your side overcalls 1NT in position n\u00b02 and player n\u00b03 takes an action, responder (n\u00b04) reacts <strong>exactly the same way as if n\u00b01 had not opened<\/strong>: In the present case, he forgets about the 1&#x2660; opening and acts as if West had over-called 2&#x2660;. Talk about it with your partner!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Score <span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><strong>20 points<\/strong><\/span> if you have answered correctly following the described principle and according to your system. For the rest of the auction, suppose you are playing Rubensohl: 3&#x2666; = transfer to Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-c9aa782\" data-block-id=\"c9aa782\"><style>.stk-c9aa782 {height:10px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">East passes. How do you react?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Rubensohl, the transfer is not game forcing and shows at least a competitive hand, so most of the time opener simply executes the transfer. However, your partner is not crazy and has some reasons to impose the three-level. With a nice hand with a maximum and a fit it is therefore well played to execute the transfer with a jump &#8230; which amounts to bidding game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4&#x2665; : <span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><strong>20 points<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3&#x2665; : <span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><strong>12 points<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3NT : <span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><strong>0 point<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your left hand opponent doubles violently and <strong>Four Hearts Doubled<\/strong> becomes the final contract, on the lead of the Jack of Spades. The dummy is frail but not unpleasant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-06eb0bb\" data-block-id=\"06eb0bb\"><style>.stk-06eb0bb {margin-bottom:28px !important;}.stk-06eb0bb .stk-img-wrapper{width:175px !important;height:450px !important;}<\/style><figure><span class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-115217\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bon-parcours-aout-diag-half_EN.png\" width=\"426\" height=\"1098\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bon-parcours-aout-diag-half_EN.png 426w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bon-parcours-aout-diag-half_EN-116x300.png 116w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bon-parcours-aout-diag-half_EN-397x1024.png 397w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/span><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>East wins the first trick with the Spade Ace and then plays the Diamond Jack, which runs to West&#8217;s six and dummy&#8217;s Ace. Given that this leads to two quick losers in Diamonds, you try to discard one of them and therefore start to play on Clubs: first the Jack, then the Ace and King. However, after some contortions, West ends up ruffing with the eight of Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-efa1544\" data-block-id=\"efa1544\"><style>.stk-efa1544 {height:10px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gather all the information at your disposal: you have enough elements to completely reconstruct West&#8217;s hand.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we look at Spades, East&#8217;s 1&#x2660; opening and West&#8217;s raise and the lead of the Jack clearly mark West with J10x. In Clubs, we know that he started with two small. In Diamonds we can infer from East&#8217;s switch to the Jack that he has the ten but not the Queen and presumably not the King: With King-Jack-Ten he would not have risked that switch, fearing you hold the Queen. West therefore has King-Queen of Diamonds and started with at least three cards. About Hearts you have a priori no information at the moment. However, remember that West has doubled, even though he has no Ace, and not even a singleton! He is thus the favorite to have four good trumps (KJ98), or even five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>West must therefore have one of the following two hands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-92f1cf7\" data-block-id=\"92f1cf7\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-92f1cf7-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-e8e4f12\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"e8e4f12\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-e8e4f12-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-e8e4f12-inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Hand 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#x2660; J 10 x<br>&#x2665; K J 9 8<br>&#x2666; K Q 6 x<br>&#x2663; x x<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-00492d7\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"00492d7\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-00492d7-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-00492d7-inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Hand 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#x2660; J 10 x<br>&#x2665; K J 9 8 4<br>&#x2666; K Q 6 <br>&#x2663; x x<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Compare the West hand that you have deduced with the two hands below and award yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><strong>20 points <\/strong><\/span>if your distribution matches that of either of the two hands. Otherwise,<strong> <span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">subtract 5 points<\/span><\/strong> for every card that is wrong.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">20 points<\/span><\/strong> if you have deduced the correct positions of the honors. Otherwise, <strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">subtract 5 points<\/span><\/strong> for each error.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">10 points <\/span><\/strong>bonus points if you haven&#8217;t been able to decide between the above two hands!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You won&#8217;t be able to make your contract if West has hand 2. But as he squirms when he ruffs with the eight of Hearts, you are optimistic and assume he has hand 1.
