The next columns list, in order, the <strong>contract<\/strong>, the <strong>declarer<\/strong>, the <strong>opening lead<\/strong>, the <strong>result<\/strong>, and the <strong>score<\/strong> earned\u2014either by <strong>North\u2013South<\/strong> or <strong>East\u2013West<\/strong>, depending on the case. The last column is more intriguing: it shows the number of <strong>\u201cpairs points\u201d<\/strong> scored by the North\u2013South pair on the board. What does that mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the tournament, the board has been played <strong>eleven times<\/strong>, producing <strong>eleven scores<\/strong>, which can always be ranked\u2014from the North\u2013South perspective\u2014from the <strong>lowest<\/strong> to the <strong>highest<\/strong>. The lowest North\u2013South score is awarded a score of <strong>zero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, if East\u2013West scored in their column, their highest score corresponds to the <strong>worst result for North\u2013South<\/strong>. On our traveller, for example, the score of <strong>500 for East\u2013West<\/strong> is worth <strong>zero<\/strong> to North\u2013South. In fact, your score in matchpoints is calculated as follows: you earn <strong>one point<\/strong> for every score you <strong>beat<\/strong>, and <strong>half a point<\/strong> for every score you <strong>tie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suppose you are sitting North\u2013South at <strong>Table 5<\/strong> (the row highlighted on the chart). Your score of <strong>+100<\/strong> beats the three North\u2013South pairs who allowed East\u2013West to score, and also beats the three North\u2013South scores achieved by pairs <strong>2, 3, and 9<\/strong>. You therefore earn <strong>6 points<\/strong>. The highest North\u2013South score is the one from <strong>Table 8<\/strong>: it beats the ten other North\u2013South scores and therefore earns the maximum possible on the board, what we call the <strong>top<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, each East\u2013West pair\u2019s matchpoints are the <strong>complement to the maximum<\/strong> of the North\u2013South score. Thus, East\u2013West pair <strong>11<\/strong> scores <strong>10<\/strong>, East\u2013West pair <strong>8<\/strong> scores <strong>zero<\/strong>, and pair <strong>9<\/strong> scores <strong>4<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, tournament results are generally displayed as <strong>percentages<\/strong>. In that case, the top is considered to be worth <strong>100<\/strong>. In the latter case, however, you must avoid being <strong>doubled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, the chances of finding a <strong>fit<\/strong> are high, and partner is marked with a few points. So let\u2019s go with <strong>2&#x2663; Landy<\/strong>. Should North let <strong>2<strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> be played? Partner\u2019s opening bid guarantees that their side holds the <strong>majority of the high-card points<\/strong>. There is no question of allowing the opponents to play at a low level\u2014especially once they have found a <strong>fit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, North can re-enter with a <strong>takeout double<\/strong> or with a bid of <strong>2NT<\/strong>, which is more oriented toward the <strong>minor suits<\/strong>. East must <strong>absolutely pass<\/strong>: he has done enough.
