It is also one of the most imprecise: by saying <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong>, the opener may have anywhere from <strong>12 to 19 points<\/strong>, and their distribution varies from a modest <strong>4-3-3-3<\/strong> to huge two-suited hands. It is therefore essential to precisely determine the meaning of the bids that will follow. The purpose of this first article is to explain the responder&#8217;s actions when they have an insufficient hand to force to game opposite a minimum opening bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As responder, bidding with a weak or average hand is by no means synonymous with stopping. Indeed, if the opener has a really strong hand, nothing will prevent them from bidding again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the responder has many options. They can support the opener in one of their two suits with a fit of at least four cards. They can also repeat their own suit or bid NT. And finally, unlike the popular belief that the <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong> bid is forcing, they can also <strong>pass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer id=\"passer\">Passing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When the <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong> contract seems more or less satisfactory and no reasonable alternative is possible, <strong>passing<\/strong> allows you to in <strong>clubs<\/strong> with three cards or repeating your <strong>hearts<\/strong> with five poor cards. <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong> with seven trumps is probably a playable contract, much more than <strong>1NT<\/strong>, which has the added disadvantage of allowing East to speak again, something you would rather avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-stackable-blockquote or 19 points<\/strong>, which we recommend, the combined strength of your two hands is insufficient to make game a good bet.<br>Pass over 1&#x2660; with at least three spades when you have no hope of making game.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-s2d3e4f\" data-block-id=\"s2d3e4f\"><style>.stk-s2d3e4f {height:30px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"soutenir\">Supporting one of the opener&#8217;s suits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The status of the opener&#8217;s two suits is completely different. Of course, showing the <strong>spade<\/strong> fit is a priority. The value of direct raises <strong>(2&#x2660;, 3&#x2660; or 4&#x2660;)<\/strong> is the same as supporting the <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong> opening. <strong>2&#x2660;<\/strong> shows <strong>6 to 10 <\/strong>total points and <strong>3&#x2660;<\/strong> shows <strong>11 or 12 <\/strong>total points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When determining the strength of your support, remember that you only have <strong>eight trumps<\/strong> in the suit, not nine. This should encourage you to be cautious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few intermediates, minimum distribution, scattered honours: you won&#8217;t win the game opposite the opener&#8217;s banal hand. Settle for <strong>2&#x2660;<\/strong>. If East has an unbalanced maximum hand, they will rebid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, neither <strong>2&#x2660;<\/strong> nor<strong> 3&#x2660;<\/strong> are forcing. And in particular, the <strong>3&#x2660;<\/strong> raise is not &#8220;stronger than 4&#8221;. Confusion is common with the <strong>1&#x2660;-2<span style=\"color: #249e22;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>-2<span style=\"color: #f80000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>-3&#x2660;<\/strong> sequence, where the 3&#x2660; bid indicates slam ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the non-forcing nature of <strong>3&#x2660;<\/strong> in the sequence we are discussing comes from the fact that the initial change of suit by the responder was made at the <strong>1-level<\/strong>. To make the sequence forcing, the responder must go through the <strong>fourth suit <\/strong>before supporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over these two support bids, the opener can of course pass or sign off in game. Here, with<strong> zero points lost in diamonds<\/strong> and a hand that is anything but minimal, East can sign off without hesitation. Barring catastrophic splits, the game is pretty much a lay-down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-s3a4b5c\" data-block-id=\"s3a4b5c\"><style>.stk-s3a4b5c {height:30px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tr\u00e8fle\">Support in clubs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the second round, it is much more ambiguous. It still comes from an unbalanced but rather poorly defined hand. The length of the two suits is unclear: you will have to bid <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #249e22;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> both with <strong>&#x2660;8 <strong><span style=\"color: #f80000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong>Q10754 <strong><span style=\"color: #f1710f;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong>Q92 <strong><span style=\"color: #249e22;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span><\/strong>K1082<\/strong> (five hearts and four clubs) and <strong>&#x2660;K4 <strong><span style=\"color: #f80000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong>A872 <strong><span style=\"color: #f1710f;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong>75 <strong><span style=\"color: #249e22;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span><\/strong>Q9854<\/strong> (only four hearts and five clubs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse still, the strength of this support is also rather undefined. Indeed, since the jump return to the minor opened is game-forcing, it will be used from <strong>12 HCPs<\/strong> upwards.
