<strong>chaos<\/strong>, it becomes much harder to <strong>understand each other<\/strong>. Even South\u2019s bids, which may seem <strong>straightforward<\/strong>, are far <strong>less clear<\/strong> than in quieter auctions. One thing is certain: <strong>South holds four spades<\/strong>. However, the <strong>strength<\/strong> and the <strong>distribution<\/strong> remain unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South needed to show the <strong>fit<\/strong> before West\u2019s expected bid of <strong>4<strong><span style=\"color:#f61616;\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>. The <strong>3&#x2660;<\/strong> bid can be made with <strong>any first-zone hand<\/strong> or with a <strong>poor second-zone hand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pushed by the <strong>preempt<\/strong>, and holding an <strong>elegant second-zone hand<\/strong>, South could decide to bid the <strong>game<\/strong>. In short, South might hold either a <strong>4-4-3-2 hand with 12 points<\/strong> or a <strong>4-4-4-1 hand with 15 points<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that the <strong>sequence is less controlled than usual<\/strong>, why did <strong>North<\/strong> choose to bid <strong>5&#x2660;<\/strong> rather than <strong>4&#x2660;<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>By deliberately going beyond the <strong>game level<\/strong>, <strong>North<\/strong> clearly shows an interest in the <strong>slam<\/strong>. Perhaps there was a simpler bid available, but it would not have accurately described <strong>his hand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong>Hand 1<\/strong>, which is particularly strong and has all the <strong>controls<\/strong>, asking for aces with <strong>4NT (Blackwood)<\/strong> is perfectly appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong>Hand 3<\/strong>, despite excellent cards, the hand totals only <strong>17 HLD<\/strong>. Since the opener may be <strong>minimum<\/strong>, the <strong>slam<\/strong> is uncertain, and the sensible choice is to stop in <strong>4&#x2660;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hands 2 and 4<\/strong> are very similar: <strong>powerful hands<\/strong>, clear <strong>slam interest<\/strong>, but a missing <strong>heart control<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <strong>competitive auction<\/strong>, voluntarily bidding <strong>5&#x2660;<\/strong> without being pushed by the opponents shows a very strong hand that is missing only the <strong>control in the opponents\u2019 suit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If <strong>South<\/strong> holds that control, he must proceed to the <strong>slam<\/strong>; otherwise, he should <strong>pass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two hands almost fit the bid\u2026 but with <strong>Hand 4<\/strong>, North would first have responded <strong>2<span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor2, #00aa00);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span><\/strong> to the opening bid of <strong>1<span style=\"color: #ff6701;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong>.
