In this context, <strong>passing is very rare.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From my side, I know I will <strong>support with hearts <\/strong>with <strong>four trumps<\/strong> and that I have a <strong>shortage in the opponents\u2019 second suit<\/strong>. The question, therefore, is not whether we are going higher, but <strong>how to best describe my hand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the table, I foolishly bid <strong>5<strong><span style=\"color: #f60606;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> and as a result, we <strong>skewer the slam<\/strong>. It&#8217;s not going to work out very well for her\u2026 but it&#8217;s a bid I have some sympathy for: a nice <strong>six-card<\/strong> suit and a <strong>singleton<\/strong>. I would not have made that bid <strong>vulnerable<\/strong>, but <strong>green againt green<\/strong>, it&#8217;s worth a try. Also, in the latter case, it really is the best bid to <strong>steal the contract<\/strong> at pairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I pass initially, so does my LHO, and then Ana\u00efs comes in with an <strong>excellent winning bid<\/strong>: despite holding <strong>five hearts<\/strong>, she chooses to balance with a <strong>double<\/strong>, also having <strong>three nice spades<\/strong> and, above all, a <strong>singleton club<\/strong>. She can reasonably hope for some clubs in my hand and a penalty to collect.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I do have <strong>four spades<\/strong> and <strong>five clubs<\/strong>, but only the <strong>10<\/strong> and <strong>9<\/strong>. By bidding spades, I&#8217;m not even sure of finding a fit; by passing, I&#8217;m almost certain to get a plus score, possibly with a good penalty. So I <strong>pass<\/strong>, without overthinking it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it&#8217;s time to lead. I know the normal lead would be the <strong>doubleton heart<\/strong>, but it&#8217;s well known that I don&#8217;t like doing what everyone else does. I decide to <strong>underlead the ace with a spade<\/strong>. (It&#8217;s true that in a trump contract we are taught <strong>never to underlead an ace<\/strong>, as it may give the king away to the declarer. But in this sequence, declarer has shown <strong>very limited values<\/strong> with her pre-emptive opening bid. If my partner doesn&#8217;t hold the king, it will almost certainly be in dummy \u2014 and declarer will not expect the ace to be with me and will go wrong.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s exactly what happened at the table. After my lead, declarer plays the <strong>10<\/strong> to Ana\u00efs\u2019s <strong>jack<\/strong>. Ana\u00efs returns the <strong>king of hearts<\/strong>. I play high to give count, won by the ace. Declarer then plays the <strong>king of spades<\/strong> and, to our surprise, Ana\u00efs plays low. She even discards a diamond and realises the deception only when I win with the ace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that point, I understand that declarer has <strong>one spade<\/strong>, <strong>three hearts<\/strong> (since Ana\u00efs doesn&#8217;t have six), <strong>two or three diamonds<\/strong>, and <strong>six or seven clubs<\/strong> \u2014 most likely <strong>three diamonds and six clubs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I need to ruff a heart, take the <strong>two diamonds<\/strong>, and then have Ana\u00efs return a diamond to put me in an <strong>uppercut<\/strong> position with my <strong>10 of clubs<\/strong>, sitting over the opponent. I therefore cash the <strong>king of diamonds<\/strong>, which holds, then play another heart. Ana\u00efs wins. I have to ruff a heart, cash the <strong>ace of diamonds<\/strong>, and then play a diamond to force declarer to ruff high and establish my 10 of clubs in an uppercut, for <strong>+500<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excellent bidding and defence from Ana\u00efs, earning us a very good score. I quite obviously bid <strong>1NT<\/strong>, with a club stopper and <strong>16 balanced points <\/strong>(for once I actually have my 1NT bid green againt green at pairs, haha). Ana\u00efs quite naturally signs off in <strong>3NT<\/strong>. My opponent leads the <strong>7 of clubs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I count <strong>three club tricks<\/strong>, probably <strong>four diamond tricks<\/strong>, and <strong>two heart tricks <\/strong>after driving out the ace of hearts. The only problem is that after the ace of hearts, the opponents can take <strong>five tricks<\/strong> before I can reach nine with <strong>four spades<\/strong> and <strong>one heart<\/strong>. Moreover, with South&#8217;s opening, he&#8217;s likely to hold the <strong>ace of hearts<\/strong> and <strong>ace-king of spades<\/strong>. It won&#8217;t be difficult for him to return the ace or king of spades once he gains the lead.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I therefore decide to win with the<strong> queen of clubs<\/strong> in dummy and play the <strong>10 of spades<\/strong> myself in an attempt to confuse the defence. The opponent wins with the king, sees his partner&#8217;s count, but at this stage cannot yet tell whether it comes from <strong>two or four cards<\/strong>. He therefore decides to return a club, trying to establish his fourth club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perfect! So far, my plan is working out. I win with the king, and now it&#8217;s time to establish my <strong>two heart tricks<\/strong>. I play a heart to the jack; South wins with the ace. He can still cash the ace of spades and make four spade tricks plus the ace of hearts, but by continuing in clubs, he establishes his club and the ace of spades can serve as an entry to do so. He therefore returns a club, and now I&#8217;m able to take <strong>four diamonds, three clubs and two hearts<\/strong> without the opponents ever reaching five tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A nice psychological play, right? Knowing that my contract was doomed to go down, I deliberately choose to play my weakest suit to confuse the opponents! However, <strong>going beyond the 2<span style=\"color: #f60606;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>-level <\/strong>with a <strong>4333<\/strong> hand, a <strong>stranded queen of spades<\/strong>, and <strong>facing the opponents&#8217; double<\/strong> feels risky.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I therefore choose an <strong>alternative<\/strong>. I start by <strong>redoubling<\/strong>, which shows <strong>at least 11 HCPs<\/strong> and, in principle, <strong>denies a heart fit<\/strong>. My <strong>objective<\/strong> is to bid 2<span style=\"color: #f60606;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span> later on, allowing Nathalie to <strong>pass if she is minimum<\/strong>. My <strong>LHO <\/strong>bids <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong>, Nathalie <strong>extends her hearts with<\/strong> <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #f60606;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>. Now that I know we have a <strong>nine-card fit<\/strong>, passing would be far too <strong>pessimistic<\/strong>. I <strong>invite to game<\/strong> by bidding <strong>3<strong><span style=\"color: #f60606;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>, which <strong>brings the auction to a close<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>West leads<\/strong> the <strong>5 of clubs<\/strong>. Nathalie cashes her <strong>club winners<\/strong>, <strong>discarding a spade<\/strong>, then plays the <strong>fourth club<\/strong> by discarding her <strong>last spade<\/strong>. East, on lead, plays the 10 of diamonds to the king and North\u2019s ace. West continues with a diamond to Nathalie\u2019s queen, who then plays the king of hearts, taken by West\u2019s ace. In North, I start by passing, since <strong>doubling 2<strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff7307;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> would have a <strong>penalty-oriented meaning<\/strong>. <strong>East bids<\/strong> <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #f60606;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>, which means: \u201cpass if you have hearts, correct to 2&#x2660; if you have spades.\u201d <strong>West duly corrects to 2&#x2660;.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I then decide to <strong>double<\/strong> \u2014 a <strong>take-out double<\/strong>, which I find more appealing than bidding <strong>2NT for the minors<\/strong>. This <strong>approach<\/strong> allows my partner to <strong>pass the double<\/strong> if she has <strong>spades<\/strong>, while still leaving us the option of finding a <strong>possible 5-3 heart fit<\/strong>. For the record, if Nathalie were to bid <strong>2NT <\/strong>over my <strong>take-out double<\/strong>, it would be up to me to choose which minor to play in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathalie is now faced with a <strong>delicate decision<\/strong> holding a <strong>4333<\/strong> hand with <strong>15 HCPs<\/strong>. She makes an <strong>excellent decision at pairs<\/strong>: she <strong>passes<\/strong>. She has <strong>four defensive tricks<\/strong>, the <strong>vulnerability is favourable<\/strong> as the <strong>opponents are red<\/strong>, and bidding <strong>3<strong><span style=\"color: #ff7307;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> with such an ultra-balanced hand<strong> <\/strong>would be highly problematic. She therefore makes the <strong>sensible assumption<\/strong> that <strong>2&#x2660; will often go down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On<strong> <\/strong>inspection, the contract<strong> goes down by one trick by the narrowest of margins<\/strong>: we make<strong> two spade tricks<\/strong>, <strong>two club tricks<\/strong>,<strong> one heart trick<\/strong> and <strong>one diamond trick<\/strong>. In <strong>teams matches<\/strong>, passing would be<strong> too risky<\/strong>, but <strong>at pairs<\/strong> it&#8217;s a <strong>very sound option<\/strong>. We are playing <strong>against Isabelle Bello and C\u00e9dric Lorenzini<\/strong>, <strong>the pair who will finish third<\/strong>. I assess it as closer to <strong>16 HCPs<\/strong>, so I decide to bid a <strong>quantitative 4NT<\/strong>. Nathalie, holding 16 HCPs herself, chooses to accept my invitation and signs off in 6NT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, the correct approach against this type of contract is to <strong>lead passively<\/strong>. With West\u2019s hand, holding 7 HCPs, you assume that partner has 0 points, all the more reason to opt for a neutral lead. West decides to lead the 2 of hearts (odd-even signalling against 6NT), and Nathalie makes the contract by playing the king of diamonds, then the ace. She gives away the queen of diamonds to the opponents.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that the <strong>6<strong><span style=\"color: #ff7307;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> contract is <strong>excellent<\/strong>, even on a <strong>spade lead<\/strong>. You win with the<strong> ace of spades<\/strong>, then <strong>cash the diamonds from the top<\/strong>. The advantage of 4<span style=\"color: #f60606;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span> is that it keeps things simple. Nathalie, who enjoys playing in 3NT (a habit shared by my partners), preferred that option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her<strong> reasoning<\/strong> was as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>I hold a <strong>very nice complementary holding in hearts <\/strong>and <strong>stoppers in the other suits<\/strong>. I also want to <strong>protect my king of diamonds on the opening lead<\/strong> and, finally, <strong>at pairs<\/strong> this choice can <strong>score better<\/strong>. I therefore decide to <strong>sign off in 3NT<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The opponent leads the jack of diamonds. Nathalie wins the lead with the ace of diamonds and tries the club finesse, which fails. On lead, North continues with a diamond to Nathalie\u2019s king, who then plays a club to the jack (to avoid a blockage). She crosses back to her hand with the king of hearts, then cashes the <strong>ace of clubs<\/strong> (not to be forgotten), and finally <strong>overtakes the jack of hearts<\/strong> <strong>with the queen<\/strong>, for a<strong> total of ten tricks<\/strong>. <strong>Some very nice play!<\/strong> In the <strong>4<strong><span style=\"color: #f60606;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> contract, you would lose <strong>two spades<\/strong> and the <strong>king of clubs. An excellent decision!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-65b015e\" data-block-id=\"65b015e\"><style>.stk-65b015e {height:51px
