J\u00e9r\u00f4me Rombaut, 2017 Vice World Champion and member of the Funbridge team, played in the Cavendish<\/a> competition which took place from the 3rd<\/sup> to the 5th<\/sup> February 2019. <\/strong><\/p>

Historically, this competition took place in the USA. For 2 years, it has been held in Monaco. J\u00e9r\u00f4me gives us an exclusive account of this prestigious international competition which was won by him and his team.<\/strong> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\"2019<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This year, we were in the superb hotel Le m\u00e9ridien<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

22 teams gathered there to play in an extremely high-level competition. And it has to be said \u2013 it is better to have a small chance of winning if you are paying the \u20ac7,500 entry fee!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2019 Cavendish favourites<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
  • The Zimmerman <\/em><\/strong>team from Monaco<\/li>
  • The Lavazza<\/em> <\/strong>team from Italy<\/li>
  • The Zia Mahmood <\/em><\/strong>team, the American team\nwith our own Thomas Bessis!<\/li>
  • The Ventin<\/em><\/strong> team from Sweden<\/li>
  • The Swedish-American team of the Rimstedt<\/em><\/strong> brothers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    There was only one French team from the beginning,\nmade up of two experienced partnerships: Soulet \u2013 Vinciguerra and Rombaut \u2013\nLorenzini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The format was simple: 7 x 14-board matches of Swiss\nover two days, with only the top 4 teams qualifying for the semi-finals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We started off very well<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    On the first day, bringing in 3 wins:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • 11.58\/8.42<\/strong><\/li>
    • 13.48\/6.52<\/strong><\/li>
    • 18.29\/1.71<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      And there we were in second place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The second day was more difficult. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Two wins, one draw and one loss: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • 10.66\/8.42<\/strong><\/li>
      • 6.77\/13.23<\/strong><\/li>
      • 10\/10<\/strong><\/li>
      • 14.19\/5.81<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        The final match would be decisiv<\/strong>e <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        The winner would proceed to the semi-finals. We were playing this match against the Ventin<\/em><\/strong> team and, despite a truly impressive relay system played by the Swedes, we managed to win the match and qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2019 Cavendish semi-final<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        Our opponents in the semi-final would be the Israeli\nteam Birman<\/em><\/strong>.\nWe won the first half 23-1 but our opponents pulled it back in the second half.\nWithout knowing it, our qualification depended on a difficult decision I had to\nmake on the second-last board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        My partner was very probably void in Spades (with at\nmost a singleton spade) but the poor quality of my heart suit discouraged me\nfrom bidding over 4♠.  This was fortunate, as 4S goes two off and 5D\ngoes one off (in the same situation, Meckstroth bid 5C).  We won 6 IMPs on the deal (instead of losing\n4) and, although we lost that half 38-23<\/strong>,\nwe qualified by 7 IMPs: 46-39<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2019 Cavendish final<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        In the final, we shall be facing our American friends\nDemuy\/Hurd for all 3 rounds of the match and shall leave the Swedes to our\nteammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        We would play well in the final too, for a final win of 70-35<\/strong>. My partner will kindly tell me that the\ntraining on Funbridge is paying off. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
