So I\u2019m forced to make a <strong>cue-bid of 2<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>. I was planning to show my <strong>Hearts in a forcing situation<\/strong> after a likely <strong>2&#x2660;<\/strong> rebid. When you jumped to <strong>4&#x2660;<\/strong>, which was rather surprising, I wasn\u2019t unhappy with my hand\u2014especially my <strong>doubleton Queen of Spades<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South:<\/strong> \u201cI don\u2019t know which version of the <strong>SEF<\/strong> you\u2019ve been reading, but it\u2019s been outdated for a long time. A <strong>two-over-one change of suit<\/strong> in response to an overcall is <strong>forcing for one round<\/strong>. The <strong>cue-bid<\/strong> is used when there\u2019s no satisfactory natural bid; by inference, it shows <strong>Spade support<\/strong> and at least <strong>11 HCP<\/strong>, somewhat like a <strong>2NT response<\/strong> to a <strong>1&#x2660; opening<\/strong>, but with <strong>no upper limit<\/strong>. If you simply bid <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>, we\u2019ll have no problem reaching <strong>4<strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>The verdict:<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>South is right on one point: North should bid <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>, a <strong>natural bid<\/strong> showing <strong>at least five cards<\/strong>, <strong>forcing for one round<\/strong> but <strong>not game-forcing<\/strong>. Its meaning is close to a <strong>two-over-one response<\/strong> after an overcall (<strong>1<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 1&#x2660; \u2013 2<strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>): <strong>11+ HCP<\/strong>, with some flexibility down to <strong>9\u201310 HCP<\/strong> if holding <strong>six cards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this <strong>2<strong><strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> response, the overcaller has two <strong>non-forcing options<\/strong>: <strong>2&#x2660;<\/strong> and <strong>3<strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, South is wrong to jump to <strong>4&#x2660;<\/strong> over the <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong> cue-bid<\/strong>. Even if he assumes this cue-bid shows <strong>three-card Spade support<\/strong>, he should bid <strong>3<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> over <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> in order to keep open the possibility of playing <strong>3NT<\/strong> rather than <strong>4&#x2660;<\/strong>, especially opposite a <strong>4-3-3-3 distribution<\/strong> with a <strong>Diamond stopper<\/strong> (ex: &#x2660;Q92 <strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong>A1084 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong>Q84 <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor2, #00aa00);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>A107).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, it is possible to make a <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong> cue-bid<\/strong> over <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong> with only <strong>two Spades<\/strong>, at least <strong>13 HCP<\/strong>, a <strong>balanced hand<\/strong>, no <strong>biddable five-card suit<\/strong>, and <strong>no proper Diamond stopper<\/strong> (ex: &#x2660;K5 <strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong>KQ86 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong>1085 <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor2, #00aa00);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>AQ93).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, many experts prefer to bid <strong>2<span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor2, #00aa00);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span><\/strong> and reserve the <strong>cue-bid<\/strong> for hands with <strong>Spade support<\/strong>, following a <strong>\u201cfit-showing cue-bid\u201d<\/strong> approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-9ad96ae\" data-block-id=\"9ad96ae\"><style>.stk-9ad96ae {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The bid responsible for the accident:<\/strong> the <strong>2<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong> bid over 1&#x2660;. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blame allocation:<\/strong> <strong>North 70% \/ South 30%<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer Who forgot to mention their <strong>four-card major<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-0051237\" data-block-id=\"0051237\"><style>.stk-0051237 {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The arguments<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North:<\/strong> \u201cI don\u2019t understand why you don\u2019t respond <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong> with the <strong>Ace of Diamonds<\/strong> as your only stopper\u2014this holding is much more suitable for a <strong>suit contract<\/strong>. This bid is <strong>allowed with four cards<\/strong> and is <strong>forcing for one round<\/strong>. You should respond as if partner had opened <strong>1<strong><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South:<\/strong> \u201cThe <strong>1NT<\/strong> response shows <strong>8\u201312 HCP<\/strong> and does <strong>not promise a Diamond stopper<\/strong>. You can\u2019t suggest <strong>3NT<\/strong> without holding Diamonds\u2014you should bid <strong>2<strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> over <strong>1NT<\/strong>. I know I can bid <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong> with four cards, but <strong>1NT does not deny four Spades<\/strong>. It\u2019s a <strong>more precise bid<\/strong>, given my <strong>distribution<\/strong> and the <strong>location of my honors<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-ad93251\" data-block-id=\"ad93251\"><style>.stk-ad93251 {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The verdict<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>South is right on one point: <strong>1NT does not guarantee a Diamond stopper<\/strong>. North can therefore bid <strong>2<strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6200;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> as a priority, both to check for a stopper and to look for a possible <strong>4\u20134 Spade fit<\/strong>, since <strong>1NT does not deny four Spades<\/strong>.<br>A <strong>2&#x2660;<\/strong> bid over <strong>1NT<\/strong> would typically show a <strong>6\u20134 Heart\u2013Spade distribution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South\u2019s reasoning is generally sound: he chooses a <strong>precise bid (1NT, 8\u201312 HCP)<\/strong> over <strong>1&#x2660;<\/strong>, which is <strong>unlimited<\/strong> and therefore <strong>forcing for one round<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is a <strong>judgment error<\/strong>: bidding <strong>1&#x2660; does not prevent the partnership from playing 1NT<\/strong>, whereas bidding <strong>1NT may cause the partnership to miss a 4\u20134 Spade fit<\/strong>. With an <strong>eight-card fit<\/strong>, it is often possible to make a <strong>game<\/strong>, even if North has no reason to bid again after <strong>1NT<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>1&#x2660; response to 1<strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, even with <strong>only four cards<\/strong>, should be treated as a <strong>five-card suit<\/strong> by partner. And even in a <strong>4\u20133 fit<\/strong>, a Spade contract is often <strong>superior to 1NT<\/strong>.
