Some of the regular players have decided to do their Christmas shopping so we had fewer players, still we were around 1,500: 632 players in the MP tournament and 857 players in the IMP tournament.<\/strong><\/p>

Wild boards offered this week a chance to score high and indeed mitja<\/strong> (SI) scored over the magical 80 with 82.52%. Angelo<\/strong> (IT) finished second with 77.21% and Gabriel<\/strong> (FI) took bronze with 76.69%. Thomas<\/strong> (FR) as Krati_Lyz<\/strong> was on top of my friends\u2019 list with 75.61%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t reach the top page by 0.33% and finished 72nd<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMPs results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Results of the IMP tournament are a bit controversial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner made +48 IMPs which is pretty awkward for a new account since the second player scored +34 IMPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I made a decision to exclude players with new profiles from the final results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore congratulations go out to Laurence<\/strong> (FR) with +34 IMPs. Second place goes to Niko<\/strong> (GR) with +32 IMPs and third place is shared by Flavio<\/strong> (IT), who also tops my friends\u2018 list and Lescuyer<\/strong> (FR) with +31 IMPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

+34 IMPs is also the amount of IMPs possible to reach with good decisions on all the boards which I counted during the play. Unfortunately, some of my decisions were not good and I finished with +3 IMPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theme of this article is when to open hands with 11 HCP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The idea for this theme comes from board 3 of the MP tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have the following hand. Would you open or pass on the first seat non-vul vs. vul?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I decided to open 1♦ and opponents reached 2NT after an easy bidding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nwould you lead? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

♦10 or ♦9 seem like logical alternatives, but if partner doesn\u2019t have an honor in diamonds, you will most likely lose a trick. Therefore I decided to try a club. This is the full board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The club lead is not a success. Declarer now established 4 spade tricks, 4 club tricks and 2 aces and scored 10 tricks for +180.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even if I choose the ♦10, declarer will cover with the ♦J and take partner\u2019s ♦K with the ♦A. When I get to the trick with the ♠A, I can cash only 2 diamond tricks. If declarer guesses the ♣Q, he will score again 10 tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the reason declarer should finesse the right defender for the ♣Q is the fact that I have opened the bidding. Even if I lead the ♥K, the score will stay the same since we will establish only 2 heart tricks \u2013 the ♥10 is the second stopper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you decided to open the hand, you get only 14.54%. In one-way bidding, Argine reaches 2♠ for \u201conly\u201d +170 for EW. Based on the scores, the majority of players passed and received above-average score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are\nsome hints about when to open with less than 12 HCP<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

1 – When you open 11-HCP hands, you should have a plan, determine which contracts are probable and if you have a suitable hand for them. When you are balanced, you have to be ready to play 3NT if your partner has (12)13 HCP or to defend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 – You should always have minimum 2 defensive tricks \u2013 honors which can score tricks when opponents are declaring. In reality, it means at least three top honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 – Honors should be concentrated in your long suits and supported by middle cards (10s and 9s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 – Consider vulnerabilities. In favorable, you can always be a bit more aggressive than if you are vulnerable. With balanced hands, it is better if opponents are non-vulnerable because of the 1NT contract. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 – You should make different decisions based on the scoring system. You can risk more in MPs whereas you should stay conservative in IMPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 – You should consider which side should be declaring NT or the major suits. If you open a minor, you are usually the one who will declare NT and partner will declare the major suit. If you pass, it can be the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 – You can use the rule of 21 or 20 which says that if you add your two longest suits to your HCP and reach 21 or 20, you can open at the 1-level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 – On the 4th<\/sup> seat, you can use the rule of 15 which says that if you add your number of spades to your HCP and you reach 15, you should open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s try a few examples. Would you open with the following hands?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hand A<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I will pass this hand<\/strong>. I don\u2019t have enough winners both in defense and declarer\u2019s play. I would like to play in Major and declare the hand if partner is 12-14 balanced. The Queens are not supported by middle cards so invitation opposite an opening hand is the exact strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hand B<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I will open 1♣.<\/strong> I want to play in a Major contract and I want my partner to declare since I have two empty suits. I have concentrated values and 2-4 defensive tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hand C<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I will pass on 1st<\/sup>, 2nd<\/sup> and 4th<\/sup> seats, open 1♥ on 3rd<\/sup> seat<\/strong>. I have only secondary values, almost no defensive tricks, and with 7.5 losers, I don\u2019t want to compete at the 3 level if opponents have a spade fit. I want to show the lead on the 3rd<\/sup> seat and potentially push opponents to 3 in a minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hand D<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I will open 1♠<\/strong>. I have concentrated values in long suits, a potential rebid both after 1NT and a 2-over-1 response and good shape for fighting for a contract in competitive bidding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hand E<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I will open 1♦ in MPs if opponents are non-vulnerable and pass if they are vulnerable or if we play in IMPs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hand is flat but produces a lot of finessing opportunities. It seems one side will play NT and I want to steal 1NT for our partnership. Any lead gives me a potential trick and opponents will not expect a weak diamond suit so they can misdefend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason why I don\u2019t care about our vulnerability, but I care about opponents\u2019, is that if they declare 1NT and we score 7 tricks, we get +100. If we declare 1NT and make 7 tricks, we score only +90. That is a big difference in MPs and no difference in IMPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course this is only theory and my personal opinion.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
