    Against 4 Spades, playing teams, you get the lead of the Ace of Hearts. What is your plan?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The solutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    1.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    1♠: It is reasonable to open this hand with 1♠. It is true that with eight Spades and a void in Hearts, one could be tempted to open with a pre-emptive 4♠, but the hand is too strong. Some pairs play two types of pre-empts to show a major-suit opening at the four-level. For them, 4♥<\/span><\/strong> or 4♠ shows true weak pre-emptive hands with no defensive tricks. With more constructive hands, they will open 4♣(4♥<\/span><\/strong>) or 4♦<\/span>(♠). Dad and I decided to open 3NT to show a good 4 in a major. But be careful, this system requires a lot of work with partner. For example, when vulnerable, we could open 3NT with this hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/div>\n\n\n\n

    2.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    3♠: Opposite a 1NT opening, one could be tempted to automatically respond 2♥<\/span><\/strong>, transfer to Spades. But what next? It is clear that a slam is possible opposite a balanced hand with 15-17HCP. Of course, we could bid a Splinter to show this hope for a slam. But this would not reassure partner at all about the quality of the suit and the strength of the hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/div>\n\n\n\n

    3.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    1♠: After partner\u2019s opening and the overcall in the suit of our void, we are clearly too strong for a jump to 4♠. We need to start with 1♠ (a jump to 2♠ would show a weak hand). It will then be time to make cue-bids (\u201cQQs\u201d as the youngsters say) and then repeat Spades to describe the shape of the hand fully<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Note that a convention that becomes quite popular among good players can be used here: the \u201cCachalot\u201d. This convention consists of playing transfers after partner\u2019s opening and a 1♦<\/span> or 1♥<\/span><\/strong> intervention by an opponent. This allows the opener to become declarer and to put the one who overcalled on lead. With this convention, we could say 2♥<\/span><\/strong> here, which would show at least six Spades with a hand that may be weak or strong. Partner reacts as if it were weak and you only bid again if you have a stronger hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/div>\n\n\n\n

    4.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    4♠: Opposite a passed hand, a slam would be a very long shot. Above all, the opponents are likely to win a contract, particularly in Hearts in view of our void, even more so as RHO has opened 1♥<\/span><\/strong>. Here, jumping to 4♠ directly seems like a good bet. There is no certainty of success, but this takes away a lot of space from your opponents, who will face a more difficult decision than if they had been given time to express themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    4♠: To your 1♠ opening (question 1), partner responds 2♥<\/span><\/strong> opposite your void. What should the rebid be? The Spade suit is good enough for a jump to 3♠, but we don\u2019t have enough points. It is preferable to say 4♠, which shows roughly that we have a 4♠ opening with some extras<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    4♠: Over your RHO\u2019s 3♥<\/span><\/strong>, opening, you must jump to 4♠, which is a strong overcall because we do not pre-empt over a pre-empt. Saying 3♠ would risk missing game or even slam and a Double would not represent the hand at all. In addition, as before, a jump to 4♠ always annoys the opponents who have Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    7.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    We have nine quick tricks. The tenth will easily come from one of the minors. If we now count our losers, there are four if the Diamond finesse fails and the Ace of Clubs is offside. Can we prevail even if that is how the cards lie? Yes! To do so, we must avoid losing the lead to East, the dangerous opponent who could play a Club through and make us lose three Club tricks. But how can we avoid losing a trick to East while we set up a second Diamond trick? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The necessary line of play is very pretty, and if you\u2019ve found it, well done! It consists of not ruffing the first Heart<\/strong> but instead discarding a Diamond<\/strong>, loser on loser. Let\u2019s say West continues with another Heart. Now we can ruff, draw trumps and then play Ace of Diamonds and Queen of Diamonds, a manoeuvre called ruffing finesse. If East covers with the King, we ruff and get back to dummy with a trump to enjoy the now-high 10 of Diamonds. If East plays low, we discard a Club from our hand and, even if West can win, the defense cannot take more than a Heart, the Diamond King and, sooner or later, the Ace of Clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Be careful, this plan is perfect to ensure the contract but would not be the best line at Pairs (Matchpoints) where the goal is to try to make as many tricks as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
