And <strong>how <\/strong>do we <strong>bid <\/strong>a long <strong>suit <\/strong>in the only remaining suit? This month, we&#8217;ll explore those questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-e8137d4\" data-block-id=\"e8137d4\"><style>.stk-e8137d4 {height:25px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You have support for partner\u2019s opening suit<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>This is <strong>one of the most important situations<\/strong> to understand. <strong>When you have a fit, the opponents are likely to have one as well<\/strong>, making it more likely that the auction will climb to a high level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That often leads to a <strong>5-level decision<\/strong>: <strong>double, bid on, or pass?<\/strong> To make the right choice, opener must judge the hand based on <strong>partner&#8217;s strength and distribution<\/strong>. That is why it is so important for responder to <strong>describe their support as precisely as possible<\/strong>. It matches a hand that would have been worth a sound raise to the 2-level in an uncontested auction (<strong>8\u201310 HLD<\/strong>). As such, it <strong>only promises three-card support<\/strong>. For example, consider the following hand as West:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"970\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Example_1_EN_.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-131781\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Example_1_EN_.png 1000w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Example_1_EN_-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Example_1_EN_-768x745.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>The 2NT raise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is only available <strong>after a cue-bid overcall<\/strong>, and in that case, as after a natural overcall, it shows a <strong>positive hand (11\u201312 HLD)<\/strong> with <strong>three-card support<\/strong> (more rarely four-card support). So you have to use a <strong>cue-bid<\/strong>. The trouble is, since the opponents have shown <strong>two suits<\/strong> (here clubs and diamonds), you have <strong>two cue-bids available<\/strong>. Which one should you choose? This is where a <strong>conventional agreement<\/strong> comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Rule<\/strong>:<em> After a two-suited overcall, the <strong>cheaper cue-bid<\/strong> shows <strong>support for opener&#8217;s suit<\/strong> and <strong>a strong hand<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Note 1: <\/strong><em>This raise is <strong>game-forcing only if a 2NT bid was available<\/strong>. Otherwise, it can be used with an <strong>11\u201312 HLD hand<\/strong> that is too strong for a forced raise. It may also be made with <strong>four-card support<\/strong> and a very strong hand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Note 2: <\/strong><em>The idea that the <strong>cheaper cue-bid shows a strong raise<\/strong> was not part of <strong>SEF 2018<\/strong> but has been incorporated into <strong>SEF 2024<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>The 4-level raise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The raise to the <strong>4-level<\/strong>, just as in an uncontested auction, is a <strong>pure preempt<\/strong> in line with the <strong>Law of Total Trumps<\/strong>. This bid <strong>denies a singleton or a good suit<\/strong> that would call for a Splinter or a fit-showing jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">II. <strong>Minor-suit support<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>It is obviously <strong>far less crucial<\/strong> to have as complete a toolkit as for <strong>major-suit support<\/strong>. Even so, knowing there is a <strong>good fit for opener&#8217;s minor<\/strong> can be decisive in letting opener defend or bid <strong>3NT<\/strong> to make. The principle is the same as after a major-suit opening. Responder simply raises with a <strong>purely competitive hand (7\u201310 HCP)<\/strong>. Opener can then, if there is room, describe where the stoppers are to check whether <strong>3NT<\/strong> is viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">III. <strong>Showing the last suit<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The space taken up by the <strong>two-suited overcall<\/strong> makes it hard to find a <strong>fit in the last suit<\/strong>.
