She meets a team from Turkey, composed of the runners-up from the <strong>2022 Women World Championships in Salsomaggiore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The girls play a great session right up until this deal that offers an interesting <strong>defensive problem<\/strong>. Isabelle comes back disappointed because she mis defended against <strong>3 No-Trumps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-b8114bf\" data-block-id=\"b8114bf\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Isabelle: \u201cI will never be able to play a perfect session. I led the <strong>Queen of Clubs<\/strong> for the Ace from dummy, Garance\u2019s 6 and declarer\u2019s 8. On the lead of the Queen, we encourage with a high card when we have an honor. So I thought her high card showed the Jack. But I would not have played a small Club. Several things would have led to me <strong>cashing the King first<\/strong>. To begin with, there\u2019s the <strong>Smith Echo<\/strong>. You know that your partner does not show count on the first suit played by declarer. She tells you whether she likes the opening lead or not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She: \u201cYes, we\u2019re playing <strong>Smith Echo<\/strong>, that\u2019s true. Except when there is a long suit on dummy without an entry in another suit. But that is not the case here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-5b9d857\" data-block-id=\"5b9d857\"><style>.stk-5b9d857 {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She: \u201cWell, she could also have nothing but the 8 of Diamonds!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me: \u201cIsabelle, don\u2019t make excuses for yourself\u2026 You have <strong>two Diamonds<\/strong> and dummy has four. Declarer has a balanced hand, so she has not more than five. It follows that your partner has two or three.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She: \u201cO.K., I should have <strong>cashed the King<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me: \u201cYes, that way you could have pinned the <strong>10 or Jack doubleton<\/strong> in declarer\u2019s hand. Then, when you see the 10 fall, you continue with the <strong>9<\/strong>. And what should your partner do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She: \u201cYes, yes, OK! She must <strong>duck<\/strong>! Then she overtakes my 7 at the next round with her <strong>Jack<\/strong> to be able to cash the <strong>fifth Club<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me: \u201cBut this is not that obvious, you know. What would you have led with <strong>KQ9<\/strong>? The Queen\u2026 and how would you continue? The King then the 9. If South has three Clubs, then it is necessary to <strong>overtake the 9 with the Jack<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isabelle: \u201cYes, but declarer played the <strong>8 and then the 10<\/strong> on the first two rounds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me: \u201cThat\u2019s the other thing that might have made you think that Garance started with <strong>five cards<\/strong>. When you see the 8 appear on the first round, you can imagine that declarer is short in the suit and that therefore partner holds five. But beware, if she\u2019s diabolical, she could, she should even, play first the 8 then the 10 if indeed she held <strong>1087<\/strong> and you led from <strong>KQ9<\/strong>. That way she would let Garance believe that she has only two and therefore you had four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You imagine Garance\u2019s face when, after \u2018correctly\u2019 ducking your 9, she sees South put the 7 on the table? Well, okay, but if Garance thinks the right way, she must realise that you would not lead from a <strong>three-card Club suit<\/strong> when you have <strong>four Hearts<\/strong>. And she can be sure that you have at least four Hearts when she counts her own and those she sees in dummy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isabelle: \u201cShe would be horrified! She would see that she can no longer take her <strong>long Clubs<\/strong>.
