You can count <strong>thirteen (!) potential tricks<\/strong> with six Hearts, six Clubs and the Ace of Diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, what will be your problem?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to <strong>avoid losing four tricks<\/strong>. While you are thinking about that, West continues with the Spade King (the seven from East) and Queen<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do you decide to do?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first idea that comes to mind is to <strong>ruff that in dummy<\/strong>, and this for two reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which ones?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, maybe East won\u2019t be able to overruff if West has the trump eight. Secondly, even if he can overruff, this does not mean you are going down because you\u2019ll have lost only three tricks and you still have top honors left in Hearts and Clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But is this reasoning flawless?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No, not really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why not?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it stops at the overruff. It does not take into account that when East is in with the eight of Hearts he can exit with a Diamond, <strong>locking you in dummy with no way to get back to your hand<\/strong> to draw the outstanding trumps. You must <strong>refuse to ruff the Queen of Spades at trick three<\/strong> and instead throw a Diamond or a Club, thus preserving the only narrow little bridge, <strong>the seven of Hearts<\/strong>, that can allow you to get to your hand and extract the opponents\u2019 trumps in order to then enjoy dummy\u2019s Clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And if your side had chosen to play Five Clubs instead of Four Hearts, what would have been the fate of that contract?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It would <strong>go down from the top<\/strong>. The defense could get their two Spade tricks and then switch to a Heart, thus irreparably breaking the communications between your two hands.
