L\u00e9a is very sure of herself, which can be a quality but also a flaw. It happens that she is quite harsh with her various partners and, often, her main reason for asking me questions is so that I would agree with her rather than to listen to my arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tonight, she tells me: \u201cRomain opened 2NT instead of 1<span style=\"color: #ed7331;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span> with his two-suited hand and, as consequence, we went down in Four Spades instead of making Three No-trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-b8114bf\" data-block-id=\"b8114bf\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: <strong>\u201cAh yes? Romain passed to deny the fit and I redoubled as second transfer. Romain said 3&#x2660; because he doesn&rsquo;t have a Heart stopper. So I signed off in 4&#x2660;.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: \u201cI don&rsquo;t understand. What do you blame him for? For not playing Three No-trump without a Heart stopper?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u00e9a: \u201cNo, but if he had opened 1<span style=\"color: #ed7331;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span>, I would have answered 1&#x2660;. East would not have bid 2<span style=\"color: #fd0d0d;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span> and we would have ended up in Three No-trump and West wouldn&rsquo;t have found the Heart lead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: \u201cDid you have nine tricks from top? Show me the two hands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She sends me a picture of the two hands. I smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: <strong>\u201cBut it was good to play Four Spades rather than Three No-trump. It makes and it gives more points.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u00e9a: \u201cNo, no, it wasn&rsquo;t making, Spades were 4-2.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: \u201cYes, I suspect so, but it makes all the same.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u00e9a: \u201cWell no, you immediately have to ruff. Then you only have four trumps like East. You still have to unblock the Ace-Queen of Spades and Ace-King of Clubs. And then, how do you get back to dummy? The only option is a ruff and then you have one trump less than East and can&rsquo;t cash your Clubs. Each time Romain played a Club, East ruffed and played another Heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: \u201cWell, my dear L\u00e9a, Miss \u2018I-always-say-no\u2019, Miss \u2018I-know-it-all\u2019, you&rsquo;re wrong. There was an amusing solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She: \u201cHelp me because I don&rsquo;t see at all how. Was it necessary to play on Diamonds?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: \u201cNo, obviously. You can&rsquo;t set up the Diamonds because you&rsquo;ll be shortened in the same way. I&rsquo;ll give you a hint: <strong>it&rsquo;s necessary to do something spectacular!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her: \u201cThe only spectacular thing I see would be to eat the trump Queen with the King, but that would be weird because I&rsquo;d give up on a natural trump trick to get another one!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: \u201cNot at all, look. <strong>You ruff the second round of Hearts. You unblock Ace-King of Clubs. You then play Ace and Queen of Spades and overtake with the King.<\/strong> If the Jack was doubleton, you cash the ten and you leave the last trump out. If, like here, the Jack doesn&rsquo;t appear, you leave both outstanding trumps out and start playing Clubs. <strong>That way, you are the one who shortens the defense.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She: \u201cAh yes, East will only get two trump tricks together with his Heart Ace, that&rsquo;s all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: \u201cThe difference is that now Romain will be able to exploit his Clubs because he&rsquo;ll have either the same number of trumps as East or one more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She: \u201cBut playing matchpoints, don&rsquo;t you think you have to try for Spades splitting 3-3?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: \u201cNo, L\u00e9a, when you are declarer in this kind of deal, <strong>you have to tell yourself that you are lucky to have avoided Three No-trump<\/strong> because even if you get no Heart lead, you only get nine tricks for +400 or +600. By playing in Spades you already get a good score because you are in a more profitable contract; +420 or +620. It wouldn&rsquo;t be a good idea to risk everything, that is to say go down, for a top that has only a 36% chance. <strong>By making Four Spades, you will already score at least 60% on the deal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah yes, I forgot, I too would have opened 2NT. Bidding a reverse two-suiter with these four small Hearts is not tempting.
