So he can\u2019t see where the setting trick could come from, since his <strong>Queen of trumps can be caught by a finesse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He thinks for a moment, and an idea comes to mind. Putting on his best poker face, he delicately places the <strong>8 of Hearts<\/strong> on the table. His goal: to make declarer believe that he doesn\u2019t hold the Queen of trumps, so that declarer gives up on the finesse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This trick doesn\u2019t work. South doesn\u2019t fall for it and lets the 8 run to dummy\u2019s Jack. But it didn\u2019t succeed, because South simply chose the line of play that best fit the odds: <strong>the finesse against the Queen of Hearts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">East knew he would not find an honor in his partner\u2019s hand\u2026 However, a small contribution from partner was still possible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-a414835\" data-block-id=\"a414835\"><style>.stk-a414835 {height:25px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What he should have done<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a purely technical point of view, East\u2019s only reasonable hope was to find his partner with the <strong>7 of Hearts<\/strong>. In that case, all he had to do was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>play the <strong>thirteenth Club<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and wait for partner to ruff with that card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If West could indeed ruff with the 7 of trumps, dummy would be forced to overruff with the Jack or the 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would guarantee our Santa Claus a <strong>sure trump trick<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-255668a\" data-block-id=\"255668a\"><style>.stk-255668a {height:25px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Epilogue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This deal looks a lot like the one in my previous article. In both cases, one of the defenders must give declarer a <strong>ruff and discard<\/strong>, hoping that partner holds a specific trump (not even an honor) that can promote a trump in his own hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also brings up the use of a <strong>deceptive play in defense<\/strong>. You can always turn to it when you can\u2019t find a purely technical solution, or when the chances of success are really too low. And you must not arouse declarer\u2019s suspicions with a change of tempo (hesitation, long thinking time) or with any mannerism.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, was it right here to prefer the deceptive play to the technical one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The technical solution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With South holding four Hearts and West only two, you might think South was twice as likely to hold the 7. <strong>But this is wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">East knows that South has the Ace and King of Hearts, along with two small cards. West also holds two small trumps. So East has a <strong>50% chance<\/strong> of finding the 7 in his partner\u2019s hand, which is no small thing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The deceptive play<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The finesse is the recommended way to play the suit<\/strong> in this situation.
