Overcalling with a two-suiter

Finding a fit that lets you bid successfully at a fairly high level is all the more likely when you can show partner two suits. So it is only logical that the system for overcalling 1NT gives pride of place to two-suited overcalls.

a) The major two-suiter

The first two-suiter to describe is, of course, the major two-suiter, which lets you compete in either major. A bid has long existed to show it: the famous 2♣ Landy. A 2♣ overcall of 1NT shows a major two-suiter with at least nine cards (five and four). Vulnerable, this overcall shows the equivalent of a minimum opening. Not vulnerable against vulnerable, you can go down to 7–8 HCP, especially with a 5-5 two-suiter.

This overcall will often help you find a good partscore or a good sacrifice, but it would be too dangerous vulnerable.

b) The other two-suiters

Sometimes you hold another two-suiter, made up of one major and one minor, or of both minors. The latter is shown with a well-known bid, the 2NT overcall. The risk is significant, because you force partner to bid at the three-level when a fit is by no means certain. Be careful: only use this bid with two really solid suits, 6-5. Something like ♠5 ♥3 ♦KJ1085 ♣AQ10953…

If your two-suiter is made up of a major and a minor, the traditional system does not let you show it. Yet you must come in over 1NT with a hand like ♠5 ♥AJ1073 ♦KQ974 ♣J5. The only solution is to bid 2♥, planning to mention the diamonds later if the auction allows. You will do the same with a hand close to an opening bid, with just a good five-card major and a singleton:

Your chances of making a high contract are not negligible, and your risk of a penalty is small. Get into the fight, even without a sixth spade.

Rule: A two-level overcall in a major can be made with a 5-5 two-suiter, or even 5-4 with a good suit.

c) The question of the double

Let’s go back to the problem of balanced hands. You pick up ♠AJ8 ♥Q4 ♦AQ93 ♣KJ85. You are about to open 1NT when, to your amazement, your opponent opens 1NT himself. What can you do? Your first instinct is to double the cheeky opponent. A penalty double: you think he will go down, simple as that.

The trouble is, you can’t be sure of anything. You have 17 points, your opponent at least 15. The remaining 7 or 8 points are split at random between the other two hands. If your partner has 6 points, the opponents’ contract will probably go down. If opener’s partner has them, you won’t even have enough to beat 2NT, all the more so because you are very likely to give away a trick on your opening lead. In fact, making a penalty double of a 1NT opening with a balanced hand is a bad bet. Resign yourself to passing, and hope to beat whatever contract the opponents end up in.

Rule: With a balanced hand, pass over the opening, even with a strong hand.

This approach “frees up” the double. For many years now, the double has been used as a convention. Today, the convention adopted by most tournament players is the following:

Rule: The double shows a two-suiter with a long minor (at least five cards) and exactly four cards in a major.

Here is a typical hand for doubling 1NT: ♠KJ103 ♥5 ♦K3 ♣AQ10752. If partner has nothing much, you will play in 2♣. If he has some values and spade support, you can have hopes of a high contract… Note also that playing 2♣ Landy stops you from bidding your clubs naturally, except at the three-level…

In the articles that follow, we will offer a way to tell one-suited overcalls apart from two-suited ones. We will also present the follow-up bidding after these different overcalls.

Practical Exercises!

All vulnerable.

Pass

Double

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Answer

Pass = 5
Double = 2

17 balanced points have never been enough to beat 1NT.
