An overcall with 1♥ or 1♠ can be made on hands with a very wide point range, from 8 to 17HCP and the responses are subject to these limits. With 8-11 HCP, the appropriateness of an overcall depends on three criteria: vulnerability, distribution and suit quality. Three objectives are associated with these conditions: to hinder the opposition, to suggest a sacrifice or to suggest a lead. With 12HCP+ the only condition is to have a five-card suit, your objective being to declare a contract.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

1. Fit bids<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After the first two bids, the opening bid and the overcall, the offensive side is not yet defined. The partner of the overcaller must therefore show their support with two opposite objectives in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • With a weak hand, bid as high as possible in order to pre-empt, respecting the rules of distributional security.<\/li>
  • With a strong hand, give partner the necessary information so that they can judge the offensive potential of the partnership and, accordingly, stop at a part-score, bid game or even consider a slam.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    With this in mind, there are two principles that stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/div>\n\n\n\n

    A. All direct raises are limited to 10HCP and the level depends on the number of trumps.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    • On the two-level: 8-10 (HCP and distribution)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Usually with three trumps, or four trumps and a balanced hand.
      Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n

      A jump to 3♥ is not indicated with such a flat hand. If the opponents compete, you\u2019ll bid 3♥ on the next round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Note:<\/strong> with minimum hands (6-7HCP), the position of your high cards determines if you should bid in competitive auctions.

      Your side is not likely to win the auction, but you have indicated a good lead. The position of your honours is a vital element for the application of the law of total tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • On the three-level:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        A jump raise of partner\u2019s intervention of one in a major is not a game-try but a pre-emptive bid with four trumps and distributional values. Not vulnerable against vulnerable, the distributional requirements are virtually zero.<\/p>\n\n\n

          B. To show strong hands, partner has several different bids available depending on the bidding sequence and the number of trumps.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

          From 11-12 (HCP and distribution), the objective of these bids is to encourage partner to bid game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          With 3 trumps<\/strong>, you can use the cue-bid<\/strong> of the opener\u2019s suit at the two-level:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

          You can also use a negative double<\/strong>, if a bid by opener\u2019s partner makes it impossible to cue-bid the pener\u2019s suit at the two-level.<\/p>\n\n\n

          Here, you\u2019d have to bid at the three-level to make a cue-bid, which guarantees four trumps (see below) and 2♠ would not be enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Careful! This double is also used for takeout, showing a positive hand and the unbid suits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          With four trumps<\/strong>, the following is available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • A cue-bid<\/strong> of opener\u2019s suit at the three-level<\/strong>, showing a constructive raise, 11-13 (HCP and distribution).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n

              This guarantees four-card support, a good five-card suit and always a positive hand with 11-13 (HCP and distribution), allowing partner to bid at the level reached. This bid is also called a \u201cfit jump\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

              The 2♥ bid has pushed the level of the fit jump to the four-level. Careful, a 3♣ bid would be natural and non-forcing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • A new convention: 2NT, Mixed raise.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                This is used when third in hand has bid anything other than Pass or after a Pass from the start. It shows support with 8-10 (HCP plus distribution), like the positive support at the two-level, but with four trumps.<\/p>\n\n\n

                Reminder: Cue-bids<\/strong><\/p>

                A cue-bid at the three-level always promises four-card support. A cue-bid at the two-level can be made with three-card support. These cue-bids are constructive, hoping that your side may be able to play a game contract.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

                Support in Competitive Situations – General principles<\/strong><\/p>1) A natural raise, at any level, is always made with hands that are weak in defensive tricks.
                2) The level of the bid that shows a fit is directly related to the number of trumps held by the partnership: a support showing bid at the three-level guarantees nine trumps, and ten at the four-level
                (or its distributional equivalent).
                3) When bidding a new suit at the lowest level is non-forcing, a jump in a new suit shows a two-suiter with a good five-card suit and at least four cards in partner\u2019s suit (fit jump).
                4) Take-out doubles, redoubles and cue\u0002bids (i.e. artificial bids) indicate hands with defensive<\/strong> values.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

                2. Responding to partners overcall without a fit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

                We limit this study to the case where opener\u2019s partner did not bid:<\/p>\n\n\n

                First of all, it should be made clear that a misfit must lead to a certain degree of caution. Therefore, all bids other than Pass show more or less strong positive hands that are never meant to be a \u201crescue\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Two types of bids are possible:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                • A new suit.<\/li>
                • No-trump bids.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                  <\/div>\n\n\n\n

                  A. A new suit<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

                  There are two cases, depending on whether they are made at the one or two level (without a jump). (As we have seen, a jump in a new suit guarantees at least four cards in the overcaller’s suit).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  1) New suits 1 over 1: check out the BONUS
                  2) New suits 2 over 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Two rules:
                  a) After an intervention, all new suits are forcing for one round.
                  b) They deny a fit in partner’s suit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

                  The two-suiter is shown at the three-level, and our side is well placed to play the best contract. Clear progress. Not so long ago, it was necessary to start with a cue-bid (2♦) then show the hearts (3♥). Clubs either had to wait until the four-level, or they were simply not shown at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Further developments after a new suit 2 over 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  A new suit is forcing, but not auto-forcing. As a corollary, the overcaller must now give precise information about his strength and distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  • Raise at the lowest level with three cards in a non-forcing situation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n

                            1NT shows 8-12HCP, with or without stopper in opener\u2019s suit.<\/p>\n\n\n

                            No Trump Responses <\/strong><\/p>While the response of 1NT can be made with or without a stopper in the opponent’s suit, this is not the case when the response is 2NT which absolutely promises a stopper. Without one you can cue-bid or bid a new
                            suit.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

                            <\/div>\n\n\n\n

                            3. The cue-bid<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

                            It is reserved for hands with at least three trumps and at least 11 points (HCP and distribution).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            It must be used with four trumps and a hand with slam interest of 15 points or more (HCP and distribution), that is too strong to use a jump cue-bid or a fit bid limited to 13-14 HCP.<\/p>\n\n\n

                            2) Repeating the suit in which the overcall was made shows a minimum hand (up to 12 HCP).
                            3) Bidding a new suit lower than the overcalled suit remains ambiguous.
                            Thus, with weak hands, the overcaller can repeat his suit or bid a new suit that is lower than the first one.<\/p>\n\n\n
