You lead the K♣ and partner signals count with the 5♣, probably showing an even number. You cannot tell whether partner has two clubs or four, so you switch to the A♥ at trick two. Partner signals encouragement with the 9♥, so you play a second heartand partner covers dummy\u2019s card but declarer ruffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Declarer now plays a diamond and successfully finesses the jack. Next he plays a trump to his king, and then he exits with a low trump to East\u2019s ace. Declarer ruffs the club continuation, draws your last trump, and plays a low diamond toward dummy.The appearance of your K♦ enables declarer to claim ten tricks. You look ruefully at the hand diagram, cursing declarer\u2019s good fortuneat finding both the K♦ and the A♠ not only onside but also doubleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you see how both East and West could have given declarer a chance to go wrong?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When declarer played the second round of both spades and diamonds, he had no choice but to hope that the high honour was singleton. Had East followed with either the 9♦ or the 10♦ on the first round, then declarer would have had a losing option: leading the Q♦ to pin the doubleton 10-9 in the East hand. Similarly, when declarer played a spade to the king, West must follow with either the 10♠ or the J♠. This would give declarer an alternative to playing East for a doubleton A♠. He would have the (losing) alternative of leading the Q♠ on the second round, playing West to have started with J♠-10 doubleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are what are known as \u2018obligatory false cards\u2019. As a defender, you should always play them as failing to do so leaves declarer with no losing option in the suit. Lady Luck may have decreed that declarer should make his contract, but you do not have to passively accept her judgement. Sometimes the most you can do is to steer declarer down awrong pathway. They will not always be persuaded, but the more often you make an opponent guess, the more often they will guess wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
