Count your certain and immediate winners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the moment, they are not a plethora, since you have only four, the Ace-King of Spades, the Ace of Clubs and the promoted Queen of Hearts. That has been set up while establishing two Hearts for East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First question: do you take 10 of Hearts or not?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, because, you never know, your fourth Heart could be an exit card.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply because a quick count of points [21 (in hand) + 1 (in North) + 4 (with West) = 26] confirms that East has the missing high honours – notably the Ace of Diamonds alongside his Hearts and that he will inevitably regain the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two tricks in Diamonds and two more in Clubs, knowing that the King of Clubs must be with East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will not be easy to reach dummy. The only possible entry is the Jack of Diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • And the 7 of Hearts. That is a little awkward for you.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    You must keep your small Diamond and, therefore, throw a Club from your hand. Two more Clubs in addition to the Ace will do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How will you conclude the play?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When East exits with a Spade, you will win, cross to the Jack of Diamonds and play the 10 of Clubs, then repeat the finesse against the King and claim eight tricks (three Clubs, two Spades, two Diamonds and the Queen of Hearts) not having conceded more than five (four Hearts and the Ace of Diamonds).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thus, here, even before the dummy appeared, the known big imbalance between the two hands hinted at thorny communication problems (21 + 1 = 21!), which were solved by using a necessity hypothesis in Diamonds and a nice unblock in Clubs<\/p>\n\n\n\n
