Although it is not recommended to lead from Ace-doubleton, the threat of Dummy’s diamonds providing discards should entice you into choosing this aggressive lead.

East should follow with the 7 of Hearts. He does not, in fact, know that his partner does not have the Ace-King of Hearts and, in any case, this is a situation where it is obligatory to give count in the suit by playing the second-highest from four small cards. He is therefore not at all responsible for this mishap.

West should correctly interpret the 7 of Hearts as count. He then has two options for beating the contract: hoping for the King of Hearts or the King of Clubs to be opposite. He should therefore, after the Ace of Hearts, cash the Ace of Clubs. If East encourages (which he will do spectacularly here by playing the King), West continues with Clubs. If East discourages, he should try his luck in Hearts. So, I thought that it was a diamond that you wanted. You should have played the 9 of Hearts to ask for a trump.”

East: “I didn’t know we could ask for a trump. When there is a singleton in the dummy, the card played on the lead usually gives a suit-preference signal. A small card “asks” for the lower of the two remaining suits and a big card for the higher. It is not possible to ask for a trump. However, some feel that when one follows with an honour, it is more for encouraging Partner to continue with the led suit. Here, East was brave to play the 2: a card full of meaning, as he could have played a murky 6. This 2 of Hearts is strongly signalling for Clubs. A very big heart would have been a strong preference for Diamonds. It goes without saying that this signal is not trying to get Partner to play a club but rather to reassure him that Declarer will not be able to make full use of the suit. West should have been more rigorous in his interpretation, deducing that it was necessary to cut down on ruffs by switching to a trump. In all likelihood, Declarer would have been unable to take more than eight tricks on this defence. West pays for dinner but East, a noble man, covers the aperitif.

Advice

On the lead of the Ace, when there is a singleton in the dummy, a suit-preference signal is used.

More advice

Except for when an honour is played, suit preference excludes the suit led and the trump suit.

What do you think of this bridge article?

Please share your view in the Comments section below!

When Declarer sabotages his contract, or simply plays it badly, the person at fault is found quickly.
