An aggressive overcall<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sally Brock aka La Doyenne<\/em> picks up the following cards as South:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North-South vulnerable<\/p>\n\n\n

Her RHO opponent opens 1♥️, giving her a problem. She could pass and hope to bid her hand later, but it may well be harder to get into the auction next time. Although she hates to overcall two of a minor with only a five-card suit, particularly vulnerable, that seems to be the lesser evil here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is slightly surprised to hear her LHO bid 4♥️, but not at all surprised that her partner (who surely had no Hearts) bids 4NT, showing Diamonds with some Club support. Thankful that her partner did not bid 5♦️, La Doyenne bids 5♣️ and West\u2019s double closes the auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

West leads the King of Hearts and this is what she can see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clearly she has her work cut out, but it looks clear to ruff the Heart. Even if she has no black-suit loser, if she just plays on the black suits she can\u2019t hope to come to more than nine black winners plus the Heart ruff. If she is to succeed, she needs to ruff ano-ther Heart. So she ruffs a Diamond (noting West\u2019s Queen), ruffs another Heart and plays the Queen of Clubs covered by the King and Ace. That\u2019s good, she thinks, no Club loser. What does she know of the distribution? It looks as if Hearts are 5-4; it also looks as if East must have the Ace of Hearts, otherwise he would have at most a 10-count including the singleton King of Clubs. If West\u2019s Queen of Diamonds can be taken at face value, then his distribution would seem to be 4-4-1-4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If West has the longer Spades then he is most likely to hold the Queen of Spades. So, La Doyenne draws all the trumps (no one has any left) and runs the Jack of Spades, followed by a Spade to dummy\u2019s 10 and the King of Spades. East is down to the Heart A-10 and the Diamond A-J and must find a discard. Remember La Doyenne has lost no tricks so far. If East discards a Diamond, de-clarer plays low on the Spade and exits with a Diamond pitching her Ace of Spades. East must give her the Queen of Hearts at trick 13. Alternatively, if East discards a Heart then declarer overtakes the King of Spades with the Ace and exits with a Heart. East must give dummy the King of Diamonds at trick 13.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although La Doyenne\u2019s overcall was dangerous at unfavourable vulnerability, it was also dangerous to pass. The Club spots made it unlikely that the overcall itself would be doubled, and after that, she just had to hope that her partner would not bid too much. As it was, her partner did well to offer a choice of minor suits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obviously, she was lucky to make her contract, partly because of the choice of opening lead. It is often right when the weaker defending hand is on lead for that player to lead a top card in order to be in a position to find a killing switch when necessary at trick two. Here it did not work out well, but La Doyenne did well to appreciate what must have happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

East opens 1♠️<\/strong> and La Doyenne has nothing to say. West responds 2♥️<\/strong> and North chips in with 3♦️<\/strong>. East raises to 3♥️<\/strong>, and La Doyenne still has nothing to add. West closes the auction by bidding 4♥️<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

North leads the Ace of Diamonds, and this is what La Doyenne can see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Declarer plays low from dummy, and La Doyenne\u2019s reflex is to play the 6 of Diamonds, starting a peter to show her doubleton. She stops herself just in time. She can see that if she does that, partner will surely continue with two more rounds of the suit, expecting La Doyenne to be able to overruff dummy\u2019s 10 of Hearts. When she can\u2019t do that, declarer will lose a trick to North\u2019s Heart winner and declarer\u2019s Club losers will disappear on dummy\u2019s Spades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accordingly, she plays the 2 of Diamonds. North cashes the King of Diamonds and now he must switch for he thinks he will be giving a ruff-and-discard if he conti-nues diamonds. A Club is the obvious switch, and now a trick is set up in that suit before North takes his trump winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Doyenne shivers as she remembers how nearly she played her higher Diamond, which would have encouraged her partner to let the game through. Rules about signalling are all very well, but sometimes the rules have to be broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A improved line of play<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After a pass by East, La Doyenne looks at her hand. Although it is a bit pushy, vulnerable, she has a good suit and decides to risk opening 2♥️<\/strong>. West overcalls 3♦️<\/strong> and North bids 4♥️<\/strong>, ending the auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first line of play that springs to La Doyenne\u2019s mind is to ruff the lead, overtake one of dummy\u2019s Heart honours with the Ace, take the Spade finesse, cash the Ace of Spa-des, ruff a Spade and play a Heart to dummy. If the Spade finesse is right and both majors break (Spades 3-2 and Hearts 2-2), everything will be fine. However, the odds of that are not very good. 3-2 Spades with the King right is about 34%, 2-2 Hearts is about 40%, making a total of about 14%. There must be something better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It looks as if East has a singleton Diamond honour or West would surely have started with a top Diamond. So, La Doyenne ruffs the Club lead and plays a low Diamond. East wins the King of Diamonds and switches to a trump. Declarer wins in the dummy and plays a second Diamond. Rather to her annoyance, East ruffs the Diamond and plays a second round of trumps, West showing out. Now, even if the Spade finesse is right, she will have two Club losers. Maybe West has both the King and 10 of Spades, in which case two Spade finesses will see the contract home. La Doyenne is considering this when she realises that if that is the case, then a squeeze will work as well. So she wins the trump in hand and runs her trumps. With one trump to go, this is the position:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Assuming West\u2019s distribution is 3-1-6-3, he is stuck. At this point, he has already been squeezed. He needs to keep three Spades, two Diamonds and a top Club. If he has only two Spades, then that suit is good; if he has only one Diamond declarer can take a Spade finesse, ruff a Diamond, bringing down West\u2019s last honour and cross to a Spa-de to cash the Diamond; if he has discarded his Club then declarer simply gives up a Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Doyenne is happy with the bidding, and glad that she did not go for that low percentage simple line. East defended very well to (effectively) ruff his partner\u2019s winner and play a second trump. Although on this occasion taking a double Spade finesse would have worked, she was pleased to find a line that worked whoever held the 10 of Spades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 Do not hesitate to bid if passing risks taking you out of the game.
\u00b7 Resist reflexes and other automatic bids or plays. Analyse the situation. Sometimes you\u2019ll have to act contrary to the usual rules.
