And the men? Do they really happen to be better than the women? Champions such as Sylvie Willard, Mihaela Balint, Jill Meyers, Marion Michielsen and Sabine Auken have all the trumps in their hands to finally put an end to this stereotype.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Compared to other forms of leisure, \u201cthe traditional card game is a category that is fairly well apportioned in terms of genders and ages,\u201d says Vincent Berry, lecturer at Sorbonne Paris Nord University, specializing in the sociology of leisure and games. With a few exceptions, such as poker, you will find more men. According to its latest figures, the French Bridge Federation comprises 1,500,000 bridge players in France, including 91,000 who are members of the Federation. Of the latter, 55% are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A story of clich\u00e9s<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More numerous on the bridge market&#8230; but not more competent? According to Omar Sharif who said in an INA video in 1978, women were at the time \u201cmuch worse than men in bridge\u201d because \u201cthe bridge player must have a killer mentality\u201d and, according to him, women do not have \u201cthe same power of concentration on a game but above all [&#8230;] they lack aggressiveness.\u201dThe Egyptian bridge player and actor would have been astonished to learn that in 2016, during the Yeh Online Bridge World Cup, the European team, including France&#8217;s Sylvie Willard and B\u00e9n\u00e9dicte Cronier, had beaten the American team&#8230; of which Bill Gates was a member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Generational confrontation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"628\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-feminine-way-1.jpg\" alt=\"Bridge the feminine way\" class=\"wp-image-50920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-feminine-way-1.jpg 628w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-feminine-way-1-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>More than forty years later, Mathilde Thuillez, twenty-three years young, world U26 champion in pairs in 2017, also demonstrates that these words are firmly a thing of the past: \u201cI am able to play for hours for several days in a row in a Chamionship without seeing the time go by&#8230; Conversely, I can lose concentration after fifteen minutes of studying my courses: it&#8217;s all a question of passion!\u201d For this young fifth-year medical student, who learned to play at the age of eight, bridge is a family affair since her parents, Pascale and Laurent Thuillez, are both champions themselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Embodying a new generation much more open-minded, the young woman confides all the same that bridge remains a very misogynistic environment: \u201cIt is always said that women can do several things at the same time! Strangely, in bridge, this becomes a so-called weakness!\u201d Men on the other hand are considered 100% concentrated&#8230; although they are privately considered \u201cmonotask people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are stereotypes closely linked with tradition: it should be remembered that in the discipline of bridge, there are Women, Seniors, Open and Mixed categories, but none of them is exclusively dedicated to men. This thought probably stems from the fact that since the beginning, women have been \u201cparked\u201d with each other. This gap has started narrowing in recent years: we see more and more women of a very high level competing in the Open events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your favorite coup?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I like to play on defense because of the complicity that builds between the partnership. What a pleasure to see beautiful signaling lead to the defeat of a contract that seemed easy to make!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>At the court, women were doing well<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>\u00c9lisabeth Belmas, professor emeritus of modern history at the Sorbonne Paris-Nord University, is looking into in the playing of games in France between the 16th and 18th centuries and she published <em>Jouer autrefois<\/em> (\u201cPlaying in the old days\u201d. Champ Vallon editions, 2006). Thesecretary general of a group with scientific interest that calls themselves \u201cJeu et soci\u00e9t\u00e9s\u201d (\u201cPlay and Societies\u201d) talks about the place of women in these leisure activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Could women \u201cplay\u201d in general?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports games \u2013 like \u201cjeu de paume\u201d, the ancestor of tennis &#8211; which required a lot of physical exercise, offended female etiquette. On the other hand, they were not at all excluded from the so-called \u201celegant\u201d games of society. At court, they played billiards, mail (croquet), game of the goose (an early board game) and cards, and they gambled and played for money. Women participated with the same rights as men in the royal lottery of France (the ancestor of the Loto) from 1776. At the start, they simply had the form of trick taking games (like whist!). From the 17th century, they progress with the evolution of mathematics (point calculations, bidding, strategies &#8230;). Games of strategy and pure chance \u2013 such as the pharaoh, today&#8217;s blackjack \u2013 are very popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who are the famous players at the court?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madame de Montespan, Louis XIV&#8217;s favorite, a rabid gambler&#8230; lost 700,000 pounds in one evening! Louis XV\u2019s wife, Marie Leszczynska, played many card games with a circle of friends. Marie-Antoinette of Austria also spent a lot of money, playing all the fashionable games with her two brothers-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Loto, an illegal ancestor<\/strong><\/p><p>Gambling has always been banned in general&#8230; and it is still today! The FDJ, PMU or casinos are authorized by exemption, as in the past.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A career to leave you breathless<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeanne van den Meiracker, of Dutch origin and living in LasVegas, has worked as a Director at the ACBL since December 2012. Let&#8217;s look back on the journey of this passionate referee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-6 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><strong>How did your career start?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My parents have been playing bridge since 1952, mostly at home with friends, but I started playing in 1976 in Rotterdam (Netherlands) at Bridgekring 1935. The club had over 200 members and they needed a Director: I took my first course in 1988. I immediately loved directing, much more than playing bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you see differences in play between men and women?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2005, I started directing Womens tournaments because my husband, Huub Bertens, played on the Open team. It is much more difficult to direct for the women! I remember a tournament in Philadelphia in 2010: every day I had a new male director under my command. At the end of the day, they all begged to be assigned elsewhere the next day&#8230; For them, even the Seniors were easier than the women!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Did you have any difficulties, as a woman, in this position?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I particularly remember an anecdote during the European Championships in Malta in 1999. Lauria was playing Five Diamonds doubled and Soloway was on lead. Lauria expected Soloway to cash his 10 of Hearts and therefore discarded the 7 of Spades from the dummy. But in fact, Soloway played a Spade and Lauria then wanted to change the 7 of Spades from dummy for the King. I had to make the biggest decision in my career as a Director: Idecided that Lauria had to play the Spade seven that he had proposed. And the United States won the Bermuda Bowl with a difference of 1 IMP.
