In tournaments, it’s very common for a side to bid but not have enough points to reach game. In this case, it\u2019s important to look for the best part-score contract: the one that earns the most points, or sometimes just the one with the best chance of making! For that, there are a myriad of simple and tasty sequences. However, some sequences can be a bit elaborate from time to time to find the optimal contract. We will look at some of them:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

East choses to make a simple raise in the minor, showing five cards and 6-10HL<\/strong> (HL: HCP plus points for length). West has a nice hand with 16 HCP and invites game, all while describing his hand on the way – namely his four Spades. But East is fundamentally weak and refuses by returning to the minor at the three level: final contract!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking at 11 HCP, West bids Clubs as a new suit at the two-level. This bid is autoforcing, but not game forcing<\/strong>. Thus, over East\u2019s economical two-suiter he must step on the brakes on the next round<\/strong> – he would bid 2NT with a semblance of a Heart stopper. Here, with two Spades and nothing even close to a Heart stopper, it\u2019s preferable to bid 2♠, which is a simple preference, non-forcing and with 11 HCP<\/strong>. East uses this to happily pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After producing the weak bid of 1NT<\/strong> in the first round, East can’t have become strong all of a sudden! He is allergic to the majors and wants to play Clubs. West must therefore resist the urge to bid 3NT and pass without reservations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposite a reverse two-suiter, the direct raise is not an invitation to game, but to slam! To show a weak hand, West ust
use 2NT. East’s return to his minor at the three-level means he has a minimum for his reverse (17-18 HCP) and West is now free to make a timid attempt at the Heart game by showing his fit. East, who still has an absolute minimum, refuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deal 5<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

East has no interest in repeating his five-card Heart suit because his partner could hold a singleton (or even a void) there. He prefers to rebid 1NT<\/strong>. But West has not said his last word: with an unbalanced hand of 15-17 HCP<\/strong> and three Hearts<\/strong>, the correct bid is 2♥<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

East is delighted with the late and useful discovery of this fit but remains too weak to add a layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First of all, East is confronted with an opening problem. It\u2019s customary, when one holds a five-card major and a sixcard minor, to start with the major if you have a weak hand (and with the minor if you have 15 HCP or more). East therefore opens 1♥ and then bids an economical two-suiter Over his partner’s 2NT, which shows a hand with 11 HCP, he refuses to play Notrump with his off-centered hand and repeats his Clubs at the three-level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This bid is non-forcing<\/strong> and West has no reason to do anything but pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
