Marion<\/strong>: \u201cYes, well done! But why do you say that? Did I bid badly? We did play a slam with 33HCP on our side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me<\/strong>: \u201cThe contract is normal but the sequence isn’t good. You mustn\u2019t say 4NT with your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her<\/strong>: \u201cBut I have 26 HCP and my partner has at least four since he replied that he had an Ace in a major. That gives us at least 30 HCP in the combined hands. I thought that I was not in danger at 4NT and that I had to tell him that I had more than 24.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me<\/strong>: \u201cThat’s true, but you forgot two important things…”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> “The first is that your partner might have a very unbalanced hand, and in this case, she would feel a bit too high to use Stayman or a Transfer. It\u2019s to be on dummy after the second round of the suit in order to ruff out the Jack without having to use the outside entries. But here, without the nine, I said to myself that it was useless. In addition, if the Jack was second or third, I would take all the tricks while by overtaking the
Queen with the King I would always lose one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me<\/strong>: \u201cYes you always lose one trick, but you make your contract more often. Who had the 9?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marion<\/strong>: \u201cIt was doubleton, it wasn’t in the same hand as the Jack. Ah\u2026 oh, but\u2026 I see what you mean. I could have made.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me<\/strong>: \u201cYes, I even think it was East who had the nine doubleton.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me<\/strong>: \u201cWell, if West had had the nine doubleton you would have seen it appear on the Queen and you would probably have thought of overtaking with dummy\u2019s King, since now your 10-8 play the same role as your usual 10-9. But anyway, you should have made because by taking the Queen with the King, you don’t only win when the Jack is second or third. You also win when the nine is doubleton.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
