The start of the play:<\/strong> West leads the Spade Ace and the dummy goes down. Our Santa Claus rejoices in advance. His partner certainly holds the Spade King and he himself is sure to get two trump tricks, so the contract will go down! Declarer calls for the Spade three from dummy\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How declarer wins his contract:<\/strong> at trick one, East decides to give count by playing the two. He anticipates the continuation of the play in his mind: By clearly showing three cards in the suit, he thinks that his partner (who can\u2019t have six Spades because he did not open 2♠) will see that he can cash his King with no danger. Unfortunately
for him, this is not at all what happens at the table: West, who does not want to establish dummy\u2019s Queen, hastens to switch to the Jack of Clubs. Declarer wins with the King and then cashes dummy\u2019s Ace and Queen of Clubs in order to discard his Spade loser. He finally plays a trump, losing two tricks in the suit, but winning his contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

East\u2019s mistake:<\/strong> he correctly realised that the contract had to go down, but for this it was necessary that his partner cashed the Spade King as quickly as possible.<\/strong> But, contrary to what he thought, the card he played at the first trick (the Spade two) was highly discouraging<\/strong> for West. The latter feared that by cashing the Spade King he would allow the discard of a loser on the established Spade Queen in dummy. Hoping for the Club King in East\u2019s hand, his shift to the Jack of Clubs was perfectly reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What East should have done:<\/strong> it was imperative his partner immediately cash his Spade King and there was only one way to do that. He had to play the Spade ten at the first trick! By lying about his length and letting his partner think he had a doubleton, he would persuade West to continue with the King and then proceed with yet another Spade. Now, unless West dies of a stroke when he sees his partner follow to the third round of the suit, he\u2019ll be able to see that only this line of defense could beat the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LESSON<\/strong><\/p>

All conventions for defensive carding are used to give signals: the opening lead, the first lead of a new suit, the cards played when following suit as well as discards. Signals allow you to communicate information that can be very different depending on the situation and that is often vital for a good defence. Signals can give an indication about count, they can be attitude or suit preference, but you need to remember that one card can always only transport one single message. What you permanently need to keep in mind is that signalling only serves to help partner take the right decisions. Here, West should rapidly cash his Spade King and East\u2019s best signal was to voluntarily indicate a wrong number of cards (because he knew that they were then certain to beat the contract).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
