It is then opener\u2019s turn to jump start his engine if he has the strong hand: a quantitative 4NT translates well that West is in the 18-19 zone. East looks at 15HCP and gladly accepts the slam proposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Careful, West\u2019s game-forcing 2♠ bid bears no guarantee for a four-card suit! How can opener now show that he has four Spades (in order not to miss a possible fit) while showing that he has a Heart stopper in case that is the information his partner burns for? The 3NT bid here is conventional<\/strong> and has the answer for everything: it shows a fourcard fit in Spades AND a stopper in the unbid suit.<\/strong> Having four Spades as well West now obviously prefers the Spade game. With a Heart stopper but without four Spades, East would have bid 2NT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking at a bad trump suit he will suggest the Heart slam using the simple yet sometimes useful bid of 5♥. West has a maximum and two top honors in Hearts, so he happily accepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
