How does one usually solve this problem?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With nine cards without the queen the best line of play (theoretically) consists in cashing the ace and king from top (\u201ceight ever, nine never\u201d). However, we only fall back to this tactic when we are deprived of any indication about the opponents\u2019 hands because the difference between drawing from top and finessing is minuscule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

So, what should you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look for clues that may tip the scales to one side rather than the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What about here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What speaks in favor of the trump queen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • with East: West has five hearts, which increases East\u2019s theoretical length in spades.<\/li>
  • with West: East has never bid, and the points are rather on West\u2019s side. In short, all this is not very clear.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
    <\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Then, isn\u2019t there a better solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Yes, there is. The ideal solution would be to get down to this 3-card ending:<\/p>\n\n\n

    and to endplay the defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Is this possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Yes, everything is in place to execute an elimination and endplay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • To start with, you have two suits that are easily eliminated, diamonds and hearts.<\/li>
    • Next, after cashing the ace and king of clubs (which would also be successful if the queen drops singleton or doubleton), you\u2019ll play the jack (note that a small card would be just as well. This jack is only a decoy for a useless finesse\u2026).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Whoever wins will have to play back either a red suit for a ruff and discard, or a spade, and in both cases you\u2019ll lose no trump trick. You\u2019ll present yourself with ten tricks with five spades from your hand two diamonds, two clubs and the diamond ruff with a trump in the short hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Even if this maneuver is mathematically correct, you will only play the ace and king from top to fell the queen with nine cards if you don\u2019t see anything better to do. Rather than blindly going for the drop, systematically go hunting for information:
      – Count the points of the defenders.
      – Visualize their distribution.
      – Think back to the auction, to the lead, to all the cards that are already played\u2026 before touching the suit that poses a problem. Or, like here, don\u2019t touch it all, and let the
      defense open it up for you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
