However, we only fall back to this tactic when we are deprived of any indication about the opponents\u2019 hands because the difference between drawing from top and finessing is minuscule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, what should you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for clues that may tip the scales to one side rather than the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What about here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What speaks in favor of the trump queen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>with East: West has five hearts, which increases East\u2019s theoretical length in spades.<\/li><li>with West: East has never bid, and the points are rather on West\u2019s side. In short, all this is not very clear.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Then, isn\u2019t there a better solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, there is. The ideal solution would be to get down to this 3-card ending:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-step-by-step-032022-4-1024x465.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27843\" width=\"256\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-step-by-step-032022-4-1024x465.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-step-by-step-032022-4-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-step-by-step-032022-4-768x349.jpg 768w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-step-by-step-032022-4.jpg 1234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>and to endplay the defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is this possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, everything is in place to execute an elimination and endplay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To start with, you have two suits that are easily eliminated, diamonds and hearts.<\/li><li>Next, after cashing the ace and king of clubs (which would also be successful if the queen drops singleton or doubleton), you\u2019ll play the jack (note that a small card would be just as well. This jack is only a decoy for a useless finesse\u2026).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Whoever wins will have to play back either a red suit for a ruff and discard, or a spade, and in both cases you\u2019ll lose no trump trick. Rather than blindly going for the drop, systematically go hunting for information:<br>&#8211; Count the points of the defenders.<br>&#8211; Visualize their distribution.<br>&#8211; Think back to the auction, to the lead, to all the cards that are already played\u2026 before touching the suit that poses a problem.
