The start of the play:<\/strong> West leads the Spade six to east’s Jack and declarer’s King. The latter than plays the Club three to dummy’s Ace, East following with the nine. Next comes the Diamond Queen, East follows with the eight and South with the five\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How declarer makes his contract:<\/strong> West wins with the Diamond King and starts to think about the situation. The big question is: Who has the Spade Queen? If East has it, West must quickly play another Spade in order to get four tricks in the suit for a quick one down. If declarer has it and it is not stiff by now, playing another Spade would give him his ninth trick. Our Santa Claus thinks about all the information at his disposal: \u201cAt trick one, my partner played the jack, so he could also have the Queen. Declarer has won with the King, but that does not mean that he doesn\u2019t have the Queen. I’m even sure that he has put up his King in order to incite me to play another Spade – cunning as he is, that would not surprise me\u2026\u201d Cautiously, he therefore exits with a Heart, hoping to find the Ace opposite, so that his partner can play a Spade through South. But the Ace of Hearts is unfortunately in the hand of declarer, who quickly takes his nine tricks. Can we blame West for not beating this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

West’s error:<\/strong> Superficially, it seems unfair to throw a stone at West for not insisting with a Spade when he came in with the King of Diamonds. He thought the Queen of Spades was in declarer’s hand and he was wrong. And yet, he bears the responsibility for this bad move because he should have understood that it was his partner who had this famous Queen. The latter had indeed tried to tell him – on two occasions – but it was in vain. Maybe you don’t see how he could get this information across, so I will tell you: when declarer played a Club to go to dummy, East played the nine.<\/strong> This abnormally high card could neither be encouraging, nor count (that would have been of no use). The purpose of this nine was to convey the following message: “I still have an honor in the suit that you’ve led.” When declarer called for the Queen of Diamonds from dummy, East played the eight, his highest card, to emphasize on that indication. This signal, which is of a somewhat peculiar kind, is called a Smith echo (or just Smith).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What West should have done:<\/strong> If he had understood East\u2019s message, West would have been quick to beat the contract. On lead with the King of Diamonds, he would have played another Spade for his partner’s Queen and four more tricks would have been cashed in that suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson: What is the Smith echo?<\/strong><\/p>

On your partner’s lead of fourth best, you play an honor in third seat and declarer wins the trick. Imagine you hold another honor in the suit in question, which your partner cannot locate (For all he knows, this honor can be either in your hand or declarer’s). How can you let him know? Well, when declarer attacks a suit at trick two, it will suffice to echo, providing an abnormally high card in that suit. This is only valid, of course, if giving count in said suit does not appear to be an obvious priority. In the above deal, the opponent played Clubs and Diamonds to try his finesse. In both suits, it is of absolutely no interest for East to give count and the high cards that he plays should be interpreted as Smith echo.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
