On sunday nights, i often get back home from a bridge competition that took place that weekend. I relax and I either jubilate or ruminate, depending on how the weekend went. but something is always there: the questions of sunday night. For the French federation, i am coaching a group of Girls<\/em> who play at different levels and they can ask me their questions on a well-known social network on the internet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week it\u2019s Alexia who tells me about a game contract that she lost. She sends me a picture of the diagram and the bidding sequence next to it and she asks me how she could have worked out to play on diamonds rather than on clubs on this deal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexia:<\/strong> \u201cWest led the spade nine to the jack and king. East continued with the ace, then the ten, which I won with the queen when West discarded the heart two and I let go of dummy\u2019s heart three. I played on clubs by cashing the ace, then a small club towards the jack. I had a 50-50 chance, didn\u2019t I?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cYou didn\u2019t think well about all the chances you had to win the contract, Alexia. By playing like this you\u2019ve put all your eggs in one basket\u2026 and they got broken when you went down by two tricks. You should have used a technique that we\u2019ve already talked about: combining your chances. How could you improve your chances of winning?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has only just received my message when I already see her answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexia:<\/strong> \u201cAh yes, before finessing, you need to cash aceking in one of the suits to see if you can fell a doubleton queen, right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cWell done, Alexia, indeed this is a good idea, but finding a doubleton queen does not allow you, a priori, to make nine tricks. You have one trick in spades, two in hearts, three in the minor in which you found the doubleton queen and two in the other one. You still only have eight tricks. Do you start seeing the solution?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, Alexia cogitates a little longer before I see her answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexia:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s better if the diamond queen is doubleton!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexia:<\/strong> \u201cBecause, if the queen falls under the king in the second round, then East has no more diamonds. In that case I can finesse against West\u2019s ten! That\u2019s awesome. I\u2019ll have my nine tricks thanks to four diamond tricks. In that deal, the technique works, the diamond queen was indeed doubleton.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cThe only downside of this way of playing is that one can go down if West has three diamonds to the queen, knowing that West may well have a queen. But it\u2019s better than immediately trying the finesse in one of the two suits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexia:<\/strong> \u201cI love this deal; I\u2019ll show it to my partner!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cOK, but in that case ask, if you want to impress her even further, ask her what could have happened with a different lie of the cards and against a very strong player.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexia:<\/strong> \u201cI don\u2019t know what a stronger East could come up with; he can only wait for me to make a mistake, can\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cNo, he can do something funny. Imagine that he holds the following: ♠AK1086 ♥QJ ♦Q106 ♣1083.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cYou see now what he could do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexia:<\/strong> \u201cWell no, I will cash the aceking in diamonds and when the queen does not fall, I\u2019ll finesse in clubs. The finesse works and clubs are 3-3, so I\u2019ll make nine tricks\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cYes, that is true. This is why he has to lead you astray\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexia:<\/strong> \u201cYes, I\u2019ve found it! By paying his queen under my king. That\u2019s great. If I see the queen fall, I will think it was doubleton and I\u2019ll finesse against West\u2019s ten. Thank you!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cTo finish, you must know that not many players will find this deadly defense. I told you so that you know about it. But my advice is that when you see the diamond queen fall on the second round, don\u2019t imagine that you play against a champion and just finesse against the ten.
