The 4♠ bid conventionally shows a semi-regular (5-4-2-2) hand of 20-23 points including distribution. West is therefore in the slam zone. His Queen of Diamonds is worth its weight in gold but he doesn’t control the Clubs, so he must say 5♥. East understands the message and jumps to 6♠<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He must not say either 3♠ (unbalanced hand in the second zone, see hand 1), nor 4♠ (semi-balanced hand, see hand 3). East, who also has a balanced hand without a long suit, knows there is no hope of playing a reasonable slam. Therefore, he goes back to 4♠ (passing would also be an option\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

East is too strong for 3♠ and has an unsuitable hand for 3NT or 4♠, so he makes a Splinter bid, showing Club shortness in a hand that is decent but not really strong and that contains good support and possibly a five-card Diamond suit. West does have ten points, but half of them are concentrated opposite his partner’s singleton. Therefore he wisely signs off in 4♠ (a contract which is not laydown). Exchange Hearts and Clubs in the West hand, the concordance of honors is now perfect and the small slam is playable (it depends more or less on the Diamond finesse).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he hears 3♠, East knows he’s in the slam zone. His King of Hearts is splendid but he lacks a Club control. He triggers the control bids at a low level by the inevitably artificial 3NT bid (remember, West has an unbalanced hand). East is very pleased to hear 4♣ and West is delighted to hear 4♥ (which shows an honor and not a singleton). Everyone is happy, so West asks first for keycards and then for the Queen of trumps by bidding one level higher than East’s answer (5♥ over 5♦, therefore). East, who has it, bids 6♠.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
