No, certainly not! In a teams match, you would simply make sure you make your contract. In matchpoints, however, this would be a big mistake, because your score for this deal will be directly related to your result. West has made a vulnerable overcall, so you can count on him holding the Diamond King and finesse against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you plan to tackle the Diamond suit?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two ways are possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • If the King is third, it is necessary to start with the Queen for a forcing finesse in the first or second round of the suit in order to capture it.<\/li>
  • If it is doubleton, you have to play small to the ten, cash the Ace in order to fell the King and then continue with the two for the Queen-Jack.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    One could trust the statistics (♦Kx = 8% \/ ♦Kxx = 17.7%) but you can do much better: reconstruct West’s hand, which you already know contains five Spades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You will obviously play Diamonds, (the \u201cproblematic suit\u201d) last, after having gathered valuable information in Clubs, the longest suit, and Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Which way do you cash your tricks in those two suits?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By first using the honors in the dummy (King-Queen-Jack of Clubs, then AceKing of Hearts), so that the two entries to your hand (the Ace of Clubs and the Queen of Hearts) are put at the service of the exploitation of the Diamonds. Go ahead: King-Queen-Jack of Clubs reveal that West had three Clubs and East discards the three of Hearts on the third round. Now the Hearts: everybody follows to Ace-King but West throws the six of Spades on the Queen of Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Do you now know enough so that you won’t go wrong in Diamonds?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Yes, absolutely. West originally held five Spades, three Clubs, two Hearts and\u2026 three Diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So how do you play the suit?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You are in your hand thanks to the Heart Queen. So, you play the Queen of Diamonds, which wins the trick, and then continue with the three towards the ten and next cash the Ace, which finally captures the King. Then you return to your hand with the Club Ace to enjoy your twelfth trick, the Jack of Diamonds. Final result: 3NT plus three (+690), which, without a doubt, will earn you an excellent score in matchpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Only a meticulous reconstitution of the hidden hands as well as a perfect mastery of the problems related to time (timing) and to space (communications) can allow you to draw maximum benefit from the twenty-six cards in your possession at the start of play.
    This is particularly true in a pairs tournament, where every additional trick that you win is worth its weight in gold.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
