Besides its well-known publications (“Le Bridge Fran\u00e7ais”, “Bridgez”, “Le SEF” and “Les cahiers de l\u2019UB”), it organises several tournaments with hands that are prepared specifically for newcomers. Jean-Pierre Desmoulins, Head of the BU, presents some chosen pieces to you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The pupils’ simultaneous is a monthly accession tournament that is organised by the Bridge University with prepared deals. It is typically intended for newcomers in the second year, but any player who is sufficiently low in the federation’s ranking can participate. This is the perfect opportunity to organize a friendly tournament that will allow newcomers to start having fun in competitive bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a deal played in the Clubs during a simultaneous a couple of years ago, rotated 90 \u00b0 for greater convenience of reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South’s hand is worth 17 points, so he overcalls with 1♥ \u2013 a take-out Double should only be made with a hand worth 19+ points. North raises to 2♥ thus promising at least three Hearts and 6-11 points, distribution included. South can now re-evaluate his hand, counting additional points because of the fit, and knows that his side has a total potential of 27-32 points including distribution: he bluntly jumps to game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

West leads the Jack of Clubs. Let’s start by assuming that East wins with the Queen, cashes the Ace and then switches to the Jack of Diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you continue?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense has 17 HCP; it is therefore possible that East does not have the Diamond King, because 12 HCP would be enough to justify his opening. Instead of relying on a finesse that will work approximately one time out of two, it is therefore better to hope for a 4-3 split in Spades, which is much more likely (a priori<\/em> 62%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Declarer must win with the Diamond Ace, cash the Ace-Queen of Spades, ruff his small club in dummy and then cash the Spade King, discarding his Diamond Queen. He gets back to hand with a Diamond ruff and then plays a Heart towards the ten, hoping for the King doubleton onside. With this line of play, South gets ten tricks despite both red kings being offside, but he would have gone down had he tried the Diamond finesse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

How would you have played if West had been allowed to win the first trick with the Club Jack and had switched to the Heart two for East’s King who would then continue with a small Heart to which West follows?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heart to which West follows? With this line, the defense tries to prevent a Club ruff in the short hand; a priori without success. Declarer can now win ten tricks in the form of four Spades, five Hearts and one Diamond. To get an eleventh trick, the best line of play now is to cash the Ace-Queen of Spades, get to dummy with the Heart Ace and discard two Clubs on the King-Jack of Spades before trying the Diamond finesse. With the Diamond King offside, declarer again takes ten tricks. +620 scored nearly 90% of the matchpoints: would you have known how to score them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
